Ken,
That's just so good to hear that you made it to the Florida rally from Americus. It encourages me for one. Enjoy the feeling that the MH is just sitting there wondering when it can get some exercise, wanting to go.
So, is this the bottom line: New RV cam, new lifters, stock pushrods, new stage I shaft rocker setup shimmed to optimum lifter preload, bottom end stock from a used engine, not bored, not stroked, no new rings, stock oil pump or did you get the gold or special oil pump? Did you shim the oil pressure relief spring? 65 lbs sounds pretty nice. Normal oil cooling setup. 195 thermostat. Stock valve covers? Stock manifold, Holley EFI throttle body setup, HEI distributor, computer controlled advance. Anything special with the valve job? Bigger or smaller valves? Stainless valves or stock? Valve guides cast iron or bronze? Stock valve springs? Three angle valve job? Valve seat inserts? What kind of oil seal system on the valves guides? Anything special about the valve springs?
I hope you won't mind sharing your engine development nuggets. It may save loads of heartburn for others.

Carey,
This Cad500 is the '73 Eldorado we took out of the car at Pull-a-Part in
Montgomery after something destroyed the thrust bearing in the '76 twice.
Since I kind of thought it might be a temporary engine, unlike the '76
which got all new pistons, etc., this was more of a "freshening": All new
bearings and rings after a light hone of the cylinder walls and a gentle
"touch up" of the valves. I even disassembled, cleaned, and reused the
lifters on the original cam. I did install a Cloyes roller timing chain
and a new Mellig standard pump. I moved the Howell+EBL EFI, including the
Holley TB and computer controlled distributor from the '76 (where it had
moved from the 455).
This time, all the work was confined to the valve train. I bought the
entire thing from CadCo: Stage 1 rocker system; stage II cam, which came
with lifters, pushrods, umbrella seals, and springs; SS 2.19" intake and
1.90 exhaust valves; fiber intake manifold gasket (NEVER a turkey tray for
me); and, special 1/4" thick rocker cover gaskets to clear the new rockers.
The rocker kit included shims for setting preload. Somewhat strangely,
one head required shims under the stands, the other didn't.
We did NOT install hardened seats since CadCo discouraged that idea. (Doc
Frohmader says the big valves and no seats was a mistake but I didn't make
contact with him until that was DONE). A 3 angle valve job with a little
relief around the intake valves was performed and bronze guide sleeves
installed. We were especially careful about valve stem heights from the
bases of the spring pockets and shimming the springs to the CadCo spec
(near OEM, IIRC). The cam and lifters were liberally coated with the lube
included with the kit. My engine guy had me put a bottle of some other
break-in lube in the oil, Dino Rotella T 15W40. That will stay in there
until after this 750+ mile trip to FL.
The only other thing I did to it was remove the #3 main bearing cap to
check condition, especially of the thrust surface. It looked good, with NO
sign of any debris in the pan, so I buttoned it back up. I did put one
.030" or so washer under the oil pressure relief spring, accounting for a
little of the high oil pressure. I already had Remflex exhaust gaskets and
an oil filter in my spares.
HTH someone,
Ken H.
