Just started to clean up what we believe is the OEM toilet in our 77 Kingsley. We took it off and are in the process of replacing the black tank. I'm discouraged by what it looks like I have to do to the current toilet. I think I might have to replace the hoses and lots of cleaning and I'm wondering if it's the perfect time to get a new one. It might work or not after I spend a lot of time in the process of finding out.
So, I've read a number of posts and there are a variety of toilets available and it will just have to be a personal choice. We have grand kids so we'll have to decide whether to get a hi or low profile. It sounds like the extra wand is not really necessary - just for wetting and probably a fancy substitute for a toilet brush that may not work very well anyway (the wand).
One main question is what's the difference between the ceramic and plastic bowls, advantages or disadvantages. Plus, how much more does the ceramic bowl weigh?
It also sounds like we should make sure the replacement we are considering fits the space and will be easy to install - fits the old installation hole, bolts, water supply, etc. Someone mentioned water pressure, is that a concern? I thought the foot pump is what creates the "flush".
And, any other comments about water use or other stuff we haven't thought of would be greatly appreciated. Anything we should avoid? None of us have used one of these contraptions before so we have no experiences to help guide us. Any features we should consider as well?

I junked the OEM recirculating toilet for a Thetford ceramic. No regrets. No staining or discoloration possible. No problems in 6 years.

What John says. I went with a Thetford Style Plus 2 ceramic bowl. It stays clean better and is easier to clean when it needs it. I didn't weigh it, but I'm guessing it's no more than 5 or 10 pounds heavier than the original. Fit fine in my side bath Kingsley. The foot pedal on the toilet operates a valve, and house water pressure does the bowl rinse. Gravity more or less does the flushing. I don't think there are any difference in water pressure requirements in any of the rv type toilets.

We no longer use the plastic toilets for several reasons:
o cost is not that different (maybe $50)
o They look more finished, the new ones have a huge bowl (larger target) and like I said they just look nicer-- what ever reason that's a really good one.
o Use the hi profile, if you put a low pro in a standard situation, your knees will never get you up! "low" is really low!
o Janie told me it's much easier to cleen, the plastic is not as smooth so it give something for the "Clingons" to hold onto.
o Uses the same flange, we install new flanges though. If you use a pure marine style toilet there are 4 flange bolts and we used to have to go to a 4 bolt flange. Dometic now makes an identical toilet to the Sealand 510 Plus (Dometic bought them last year) with now an RV style 2 bolt flange.
o Pastic toilets with a 2 bolt flange wiggle on the mount, gives you a moving target if that's the sort of fun you seek!
o DON NOT buy a Thetford "Bravura" model toilet-- the thing is like a rubber thrown, it is a really flensey design. In my opinion, any company that makes such a crappy crapper should not get any money from me! Their china toilets are OK, to me it's just a personal thing.
o The "bone" color toilets look pretty close to the off white color of the bath molds.
o The "wand" is something that falls behind the toilet if you don't figure out a place for it. There's really not much room when you're all situated in there and I also feel it usually ends up a power toilet brush. Sometimes though a store will only carry the "Mo Money Model" and if you wanna cash and carry you may end up with one. It's not much cost difference so I usually say whatever when I'm told the "non wand" model is backordered. My guess is the reason they are on backorder is because most other people don;t care eather and the lower priced one sells more. Hey, they gotta do something with the "magic wand" copies so there ya go.
Lastly o The chins models makes you feel like you've really done something after expending all that work to change the toilet. I mean how many times do you drag your buddy in to look at your replacement toilet, well the ladies will at least do that-- maube even you!

Thanks everyone for your input.
I finally got the 18 inches of snow we had this weekend off the drive and the temp is all the way up to 6 this morning. It's a good day to stay in the basement, keep the wood stove going and work on the toilet.

the more vertical the fall rate on china and ball stopper, which one is best and firm on the floor?
Can anyone say the best one for these features?

Jim totally covered it, above. I replaced the recirculating Thetford with a Sealand 510 shortly after our first summer trip about five years ago. Can you guess why??? Anyway, we love it and have had no issues with it.

whats wrong with this 310, it looks like a very vertical throat on it to keep clean and i like 19 inches a little higher than normal

Thanks everyone for your input on RV toilets. I just hooked up the OEM toilet from our 77 Kingsley to a water source in our basement and it works just fine - no leaks and the seal at the bottom of the bowl is still good. So, with three grand kids, 3, 6 and 8 years old (2 oldest are boys) we've decided to put it back in the GMC this spring and use it. We'll keep all the good info you provided handy and we should be all set when it comes time for a replacement. I'd rather the kids learn how to use an old one rather than a brand new one. What's that old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Now if the rest of the fresh water system works we're in business this coming summer.

Rob,
Have you tried PULLING UP on the flush pedal instead of pushing down? On
our fairly new Thetford, that opens the water valve without opening the
dump ball. It's not possible, on ours, to get water flow before the ball
opens when pushing down.

Ken,
Nope, the Thetford Aqua Magic STYLE PLUS Toilet requires you push down. Actually it's not too hard to learn how far to push it down
without opening the ball. I only mentioned it because when I read the reviews other purchasers mentioned it and I didn't want to
recommend it and have that come back to bite me!
