Has anyone considered removing you fuel pickup socks and installing a 100 micron filter before your electric fuel pump? (Outside the tank) My only concern would be the wicking effect of the sock during very low fuel levels. Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

The sock is there to prevent water pick-up. It does virtually nothing for filtering stuff unless it is gravel or chunks of rust that form inside non maintained systems. Many owners have blown them off with reverse air pressure because they are plugged with years of rust and gunk that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Hey Bob,
How does the filter sock stop water? Is the weave too tight for water?

I would surmise a petrol soaked 40 micron weave would repel any standing water's surface tension? I know from experience, those haz-mat oil absorbent pads will soak up oil but not water, perhaps same principal.

I may just make a strainer for the pickup straw like this, and go with an aeromotive 100 micron pre filter and 10 micron post pump filter and remove the carb filter.

As important as it is to get fuel from the tanks to the motor and the fact that ethanol laced fuel are attacking our nitril rubber hoses and steel fuel tanks-- filters and knowing the age and condition of your fuel delivery system is really important.  Don't just say "hey, it's running lets go" or "it only leaks a little when the tanks are close to full".  These are signs of issues possibly and man, you really need to know what's going on down there.

I'm not aware of the filter socks doing anything about water seperation, I do know though if you suck up a bolder and it gets stuck in the pickup tube your fuel system could be comprimized and that's why I install new filter socks when I go through fuel delivery systems.  They are not expensive and in that you must drop the tanks to deal with them, putting in new when the tanks are down seems like a no brainer to me.

As expensive as new senders are, I want to protect that pickup tube.

I'm not sure of the mechanism but have seen it in action. Water will totally block the sock. I'm not sure if it is surface tension or what, but that is the purpose of the sock. I imagine some google searches will shed light on it.
