Is the '76 a GMC-fitted coach or one by Coachmen or someone else? That's very likely the difference -- upfitters did different stuff.

My '77 rear bath Birchaven has two removable sections in that cross member. The central one looks OEM and there is nothing going through the opening. The other is more towards the driver's side, used for the grey tank outlet, and was apparently cut with the torch setting on "Obliterate". A fast, overly large, and nasty cut.

From the initial replies, it would appear this frame change occurred in 1973 -- my 73 coach is serial number 267 -- and Matt's late 73 has the removable section.
So, hopefully other 73 owners could let us know about their frame.
Thank you all for the replies.
Dennis
Rob -- before I posted my question, your photos were some I starred at for a while trying to determine if the frame had the removable section. Funny, once you told me it did, it was easier to see.

The original black tank discharge on my coach was a stiff, corrugated rubber hose. Later in 73 I believe the discharge was changed to a rigid pipe -- and I now wonder if the frame change came at that time to accommodate the pipe installation/maintenance.
Thanks,
Dennis

Many of those changes were driven by the assembly process in the plant.

Date of frame change?

Curious as to the date of this frame change to the rearmost crossmember.
Here is a photo showing my 73 --

And here is a link to the same crossmember on a 76 coach -- see the removable piece just below the black tank drain line - I am curious as to the date of this change.

Thanks for looking.

Here are more details on frame changes from multiple sources:
Published GVWs for 26', all years:
....1973 to....Front..Rear..Total
..TZE 2400...4000..7000..10,500
late 73-74 ...4200..7000..11,200
1975-76-77..4200..7500..11,700
1978...........4500..8000..12,500
Note: While some of these changes can be supported with design changes, one was a paper upgrade by K. Stubenvoll
Parts Books frame section 11.002 (per P/N change)
X-173019, published Jan 1973 (first manual)
Several frame crossmember P/N changes indicated. (apparently from preproduction models).
X-173019, published May 1973
same P/N listings as above.
75-Z & 76-Z don't have books.
The new diagonal brace for the front frame assembly started with 5V100542 (p/n 795964).
P/N 715304 was apparently issued to retrofit earlier TZE coaches.
77-Z published Sept. 1976
Crossmembers again changed along with several bolts/nuts/washers.
78-Z published May 1979
no changes from 77-Z
Maint Manuals

Frame material SAE 950, 1023 & 1080
Note: Can't find my reference but remember reading crossmember steel was changed to same as side rail steel ~1975.

1975 model major MH Improvements.....

Crossmembers SAE 950
1977 & 78 Chassis

Option #F11403/4 on 26" & F10403/4 on 23' Base Fram Reinf Spec shows up on GB stickers from ~3V102060 to the end of 1974 model production. Dave G and I tried to figure this one out for a long time. My take, one of the frame changes, which one?
The above are all the "official" sources I am aware of.
After writing the GMC Motorhome History and trying to make sense with this kind of confusing data, is it any wonder I don't have much hair left?. Anyway, have fun trying to understand "what happened back then".

Sorry Sean, The earliest GMC MH sold to the public still exists in North TX (0021). There are several with VINs under 100, an outstanding survivors rate for early coaches.
