G’day,
I got a call from Simeon of Aerogel Australia today. He advised the
following:
1) Aerogel comes in varying thicknesses – 10mm / 5mm / 2mm (used for roll up
shades)
2) Aerogel 10mm comes in a roll that is 1440mm wide
3) Aerogel 10mm can be supplied in lengths as required
4) The price of Aerogel 10mm is $45.50 + 10% GST ($50.05) per square meter
5) There are supplies in Melbourne and Adelaide
Rough calculations:
GMC = 26’ L X 8’ W = 208 sq. ft. = 19.33 sq m X $50.05 = $967.46 AUD / $0.87
= $841.70 USD
I originally contacted Aerogel in the USA and they passed me to Aerogel
Australia, how about someone in the USA contacting them to see what it would
cost over there.

I'll be interested in a source too. I just pulled down the headliner that was above the stove/fridge/bath/closet modules, (about a two hour job, easier than I expected). There had been some sagging and apparent water damage in that section. The good news of what I found was no evidence of leaks through the roof, the bad news was two large mouse nests with their associated "leakages". That answers the musty smell question. So now I'm interested in reinsulating. What I think I understood from a previous thread was I need to scrape out all the original insulation (finally, an excuse to buy one of those cool multi-function tools!), then add new insulation. Looking at all options, Aerogel, Microfoil, Reflectix, and foil-backed urethane foam. Always interested in comments/opinions on what's best.

This is really interesting. Not that it could be used by itself, but in ADDITION to normal, standard materials, it could possibly make enough of a difference to only have one roof AC. Too thin to use by itself for not enough r value in the 10mm product. Just thinking out loud. Gets confusing, r value and thermal barrier balance.

For the hell of it I worked out a guesstimate of what it would cost to insulate the ceiling in a GMC with 10mm Spaceloft.

I found a sketch that Bruce Tara did of the headliner and it works out at 208 inches in length and 74 inches wide. That does not include the area above the cockpit. Add 50 inches to the length for that which makes a total of 258.
Since this product comes in 58 inch wide sections to determine how many panels 58" wide by 74" long you'd need you divide 258 by 58 and you come up with 4.45. That would have to be rounded up to 5.
Therefore you need 5 pieces 74" long for a total of 370 inches or 30.8 feet. You'd have to round that up to 31.
