* Possible 403 Oil Pans ? *
I will R & R some of the things on my punch
list such as the timing chain, water pump,
fuel pumps and oil pump on our trusty 1978
Eleganza II with the 403.
While looking at the Aluminum timing cover,
Ragusa tranny pan and final drive cover I am
wondering about replacing the oil pan with a
finned Aluminum Oil Pan ~
What Is Available and what are the benifits ?

Joe,
I have NEVER seen a cast aluminum oil pan a front wheel drive Olds. I have seen fabricated oil pans for rear wheel drive Olds
engines on Jegs or Summit.
You could have one fabricated out of sheet aluminum but I think the gains in heat transfer wouldn't make much difference in the oil
temp.
If you have a properly functioning OEM radiator the oil will be cooled properly. If you're concerned add a remote air / oil cooler
downstream of the in radiator oil cooler.
Depending on how efficient that cooler was you might have to have add a temperature control valve if you were to drive the coach
during the winter.
Also be aware that in an Olds 455 / 403 the oil is filtered AFTER it is cooled, reducing the oil cooler inlet temp might affect the
flow rate through the filter.
Regards,
Rob M.

The biggest reason I see for one not being offered is there is not much of a market because you have to pull the engine to install it. It is not a simple job like a transmission pan replacement.

Not only that, there's no need for it.
