The starter on my Onan is doing strange things. Once I hit the start button, the starter engages the flywheel turns the motor over. The problem is that it does not always disengage. If the Onan fails to start, it just keeps cranking until I disconnect a battery cable. Sometimes when the Onan starts the starter motor still stays engaged with the flywheel and I cannot shut it down or get it to disengage unless I disconnect a battery cable.
I know I will need to go through the test procedures to see if it is circuit board related. Maybe the switch or other component on the board is malfunctioning?
My hunch is that it is the actual starter motor that is getting hung up and is not releasing?
I am also wondering about the starter motor bracket. If that is cracked or bent could it cause the starter to be miss-aligned and hang up on the flywheel?
I looked at the bracket about a month ago and at first glance it seems that it is mounted between the motor and the generator. Do you have to separate them to install the new and improved heavy duty steel alternator bracket? I would think it would be an easy install but not sure?
Any thoughts before I work on this tomorrow?
