The starter on my Onan is doing strange things. Once I hit the start button, the starter engages the flywheel turns the motor over. The problem is that it does not always disengage. If the Onan fails to start, it just keeps cranking until I disconnect a battery cable. Sometimes when the Onan starts the starter motor still stays engaged with the flywheel and I cannot shut it down or get it to disengage unless I disconnect a battery cable.
I know I will need to go through the test procedures to see if it is circuit board related. Maybe the switch or other component on the board is malfunctioning?
My hunch is that it is the actual starter motor that is getting hung up and is not releasing?
I am also wondering about the starter motor bracket. If that is cracked or bent could it cause the starter to be miss-aligned and hang up on the flywheel?
I looked at the bracket about a month ago and at first glance it seems that it is mounted between the motor and the generator. Do you have to separate them to install the new and improved heavy duty steel alternator bracket? I would think it would be an easy install but not sure?
Any thoughts before I work on this tomorrow?

Its easy enough to determine if it is the control board holding the solenoid engaged..when the unit demonstrates the bad behavior just yank the low-current wire off the starter solenoid. If the bendix immediately disengages then that would be a good indication that it is the control board at fault. If it stays engaged with the flywheel then you can go after something mechanical instead.
Defective control boards can act up in all sorts of ways. I have seen a bad control board start cranking an onan on its own..at random. I was out in my driveway one day and heard my onan cranking with no one around... so I installed in a dinosaur board and it never acted up again...

Mine did that years ago. It was caused by the broken starter bracket being
broken. I traced around it over a piece of 3/8" plate and cut it out with a
torch. Cleaned it up, drilled mounting holes, ... been that way for ...
wow!, 12 years or so!
Applied GMC would be your best bet though. Jim has 'em in stock.

Jim,
Good idea on pulling the low voltage wire off the starter solenoid. I will try that in the morning. If that stops the cranking then we know the board is acting up.

If you find the bracket cracked or broken check the Onan rubber isolation mounts. If hanging low it can bang the starter against the metal floor of the Onan enclosure and break the starter mount.

Larry,
Was the new bracket difficult to install?
