It seem to be the case that it doesn't matter what you pay to start. Your going to have $25,000. in it or more no matter what. Right guys? ( GRIN ) Tony. We've talked on the phone about Ultras, and GMC's. You have a lot going on. Maybe find one closer to home. And spend that travel money, and time on the coach. Work out another arrangement on the boats. ( those are neat boats. ) ( can I have one. PLEASE PLEASE ) Call me tonight.

$25K would probably be a minimum that you would end up with. I probably spend $2K TO $3K a year on upgrades and neat things.

Hi Bob,

Noooooooooo... you can not have my boat(s) toys... Laughing

BTW - For almost 2 years now; I have been looking into which way is best (for me) to pick up my stuff in CA.

Some of the ideas and cost I have talked about are in another thread.

So we do not repeat it again; below is a link to some ideas and figures I had, to get the stuff back east.
IF you have not already seen it I hope it makes it easier for you to catch up on.

No. You can get one that is useable for less than $10k. You CAN spend as much as you want for stuff that makes you feel better about safety, reliability and aesthetics. But almost all of that is optional.

Get one that has some miles and years left in it (good tires and mechanicals) and take it to the desert or the lake or a rally or whatever. Start tinkering after you get back. The dollars will flow, but you can take as many years as you want to put that $25K into it, if ever.

It always irks me when the people here with more money than thought try to scare off a newbie with that $25k figure.

Define optional. Owning a GMC is optional. Nobody said that $25K had to be put into a coach to make it usable. What has been said is that, eventually, you'll have $25K in the coach. The number is not written in stone but it's a good approximation.

I'm also not clear on what part of safety and reliability is optional. Please explain.

What irks me is someone who thinks they can buy a cheap coach, has a budgeted amount of money to do the work they want to do, guts the coach, runs out of money, and we lose another one. Or someone buys a cheap coach and tries to drive it a thousand miles home and loses an engine or has a fire.

I'd rather scare someone up front than have them get beat up later.

If someone wants a really cheap RV, they should get an Ultravan. Sorry, Tony! The devil made me do it. Twisted Evil

Tony. Per our discussion on the phone last night. I think you have the start of a good plan. You've thought this out well. Plus there are GMC'ers, and Corvair people that can assist you on the way back home in April if you encounter problems. And I'm on that route. Some background here. I've known Tony for a few years. As we both are interested in Ultra Vans. So I'm VARY pleased that he's now also interested in GMC's. This will be FUN. I think he'll be an asset to the forum. I do apologize that I irked someone on the forum. And that I was scaring newbies off. That wasn't my intent. We need new members vary much. In fact this year I've bought GMCMI memberships for two people. One in Wisconsin, and one in Indiana. The ( GRIN ) was intended to indicate that I was joking around. So, Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. As to my having more money then thought. Funds in the bank isn't my strong suit by a long shot. Wish I was wealthy. Then I wouldn't have to
do all this work on our GMC. And I wouldn't be making my own EFI system. I can only dream. ( GRIN )Again I apologize

Rear disk brakes. One-ton front end. New engine. New transmission.

I say again. You can get one for less than $10k that has working fixtures and appliances and that will get you tens of thousands of miles before it needs big bucks.

By then you can decide if the GMC game is one you want to stay in. And you can decide if you need/want the big ticket items.

I paid $6800 for the '73 23' Sequioa, 67,000 original miles. $1k for 16" steel rims and Michelin tires. $100 for new chassis battery. Second hand fridge, $150. $90 for a new Progressive Dynamics converter. $300 for Honda Odyssey seats and bases. Ready to use.

I'll take $8k for it right now.
