My GMC should arrive here in OZ in a week or two and
I am researching ways to convert to Right hand drive
rob has shown me his setup which will probably be the way i go.
but i was wondering if anyone had tried a rack and pinion conversion

Trevor,
Just off the top of my head, I'd say substituting R&P would be much more
difficult than moving the steering box.
First off, to avoid changing too many suspension components, you'd want the
assembly to directly replace the cross-frame tie rod (the proper
nomenclature for which I don't recall). The passageway between the main
crossmember and the oil pan is probably too tight to allow the rack to pass.
Even if you overcome "First", you'll find that the Pinion (where the
steering column attaches to the R&P assembly) will be well aft of the
current steering box location. Thus, there will have to be some sort of
complex linkage or the steering column will be approximately vertical --
making it a bit difficult to get in and out of the driver's seat.
With those figured out (or probably as a better "First"), you'll have to
find a R&P assembly long enough for the GMC -- just changing the "end arms"
would probably not be beneficial to the steering geometry. :-)
That's probably not the best project for which to reinvent the wheel --
copy your mates' designs. Just because Bobby Moore could never do anything
like anyone else doesn't mean you MUST continue his tradition. :-)

Trevor,
You need to find Ian Kunik he moved to Queensland recently and he converted his GMC 23' coach himself. He has sold the coach and it resides some where north of Sydney. He used the original steering box (as is the same in my coach) and I know the only part he purchased for the actual steering conversion was a bolt for the idler arm. The rest of the conversion to the inside was all mirror copy and done by him. The only other cost I believe was the engineers report all up actual money spent was under $1000 that is WOW! He was going to do a detailed step by step write up for me of the conversion but I had lost contact with him before I got it so I am not holding out on seeing it, but you never know.
What are you going to do re the location of the door to meet the Australian requirement?

Rack and pinion is a really col idea.
I built a R&P for my '69 corvette before there were any kits using a Grand AM rack. It works fantastic, so much better than the piece of junk that was in there
but I wonder if there are any trucks that use a front steer rack with the input pointing towards the front.
Or if R&P is even a good idea on a heavy vehicle...

from research i have done this R&P idea looks too difficult
the main problem i can see is getting the steering linkage to connect with the rack .
as i dont have the coach here yet i cannot look at it and make decissions
i just thought that maybe someone had already gone thru the motions .

thanks peter
i have rung the only Kunik in the white pages and they believe they are the only ones in australia could the spelling be wrong.
do you have any other leads to his whereabouts
as for the door we are undecided yet and will make the decision when we get the coach here and have a good look at her.
but at this stage our options are
1/ remove the tub seat behind the existing driver and put in a smaller door (the regulations state the door must allow a normal size person to easily enter or exit the living cabin ETC.
see item 4.7 in link below
www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/formsdat.nsf/forms/QF4550/$file/F4550_ES.pdf
we will have to discuss this with an engineer
if we do this we will leave the existing door where it is
2/ swap the kitchen and table one side to the other. if we do this we will have to loose the fold down dinette and make a L shaped lounge / table as we have dry side bath which finishes more forward of the existing door frame
if we do this we will take the existing door and swap to the other side

Trevor,
I was under my coach this afternoon. I think I underestimated the
difficulty of incorporating R&P. :-)

Is it possible to use a steering box from a truck made in Australia and just extend the steering link over to the original location?

That looks pretty straight forward. Am I missing something that makes this complicated?

kerry i thisnk the steering linkage and box part will be relatively straight forward . all the worry to get it registered here will be in changing the dash, the air conditioning. the current passenger wiper will have to be changed to pivot from the outside , park brake actuator (whioh does not currently exist), pedals and foot well, retractable lap sash seat belts, steering column, entry door on other side
