With all the off topic discussion on off topic discussions I hesitate to ask. But - The GMCnet/forum is, I suspect, a rich vein for the information I need.

This Christmas I gave the CFO a gift certificate for "one set of hearing aids ASAP." The gift to her, as she sees it, is that I will wear them. (I have no hearing problem it's just that everyone mumbles and refuses to speak up and the audiologists tests must be wrong.)

I know very little about this subject. What do I need to know, what questions should I ask when pursuing the procurement hearing aids?

Thanks

Keeping with GMC content - be careful of those hearing aids - you may start to hear squeaks and rattles appearing in the coach that will require your attention!

What's the beat hearing aid for the GMC?

I don't have an issue myself (yet) but I know from those close to me that hearing aids are an unpleasant solution. I just read about a different approach by a Stanford University MD. Read about it here: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-12-12/soundhawk-hearing-aid-by-rodney-perkins-runs-on-bluetooth-and-an-app

I have some late model hearing aids. Name brand Phonak. They work much better than those big pink things that look like a wad of bubble gum in your ear. The batteries last a week.

Mine were supplied by Worker's Comp. So I do not know the price.
I like them. They come with a remote volume changer.

The best hearing aids are the ones that translate the frequency range(s) that you can't hear to the frequency range(s) that you CAN hear. Not just amplification. Defnitely NOT cheap.

Amplification makes your deafness worse.

A good place to start is Hearing Planet on the web. And yes, hearing aids do indeed take some getting used to.

Depends on how your hearing is degraded.  The audiologist and ENT medic are Your Friends.  Get recommends for both, and then perhaps a second opinion if something sounds silly.  They ain't cheap, but in many siotuations a properly designed aid is invaluable.

Due to an accident, 40 years ago I lost the hearing in my left ear
with some noticeable degrading in my right ear. I went to a hearing
center at a nearby University and they fitted me with a bypass system
(microphone in left ear and receiver in right ear). As I left the
parking lot of the University I had my window down and a medium sized
cc Jap made motor bike passed by as he accelerated. I about went
through the roof of my car from the loud noise. I had several issues
with that set of hearing aids and it seemed that they were being
worked on more than they were in my ear. I got tired of them and just
quit wearing them.
Three years ago I got fitted with one for my right ear; it has no
volume control, no pen to adjust for background noise just put in and
use. It does have a noise suppression feature if I get into a very
loud environment. It is not perfect but it is better than without the
aid.

I am on my third set over the last 10 years. I got these at Costco and they work really well. They also have a "remote" that you can carry in a pocket, which will adjust volume and also act as a receiver (and microphone) for a Bluetooth phone or a special transmitter that you can hook up to the audio output of you TV or whatever. With this technology, the "remote" sends the audio to the "in-ear" hearing devices and you get the sounds right into your ears. They are infinitely adjustable by Costco's audiologists to zero in on your particular range of loss. I chose Costco this time because of cost and accessibility. Check them out.

Well, a lot of the sound tweaking algorithms - mostly developed by the Navy and its contractors secretly some years ago - are finally finding their way into hearing aids.  We've been using them in audio processing for ten - fifteen years now.  Depending on your type of loss, a modern adaptive hearing aid will help a lot - and a lot more than a 20 year old design.
For a quick look at the genre, beg or borrow a set of Bose noise cancellers and try them in your GMC.  Evne they - which are a very simple setup - show a marked improvement in hearing what you want to hear.
