I am sure I have contributed to being off topic a few times. I have also tried to follow the tone and content that I have seen in my short time on this forum. I have pretty thick skin, so you can't offend me. I am also very tolerant of others.

I really like the technical content but also enjoy the sense of community, which does include some off topic stuff. Like many of you I frequent a number of forums, and I think this one has the pretty good balance.

Love the trip reports and hearing about others projects, coaches and other GMC experiences, even if only a loose connection to GMC.

Thanks to everyone who participates and keeps the GMC community going.

So what are we to do. Wait for someone to join the group who has an
Airstream trailer and then complain because all the email is about GMC
motorhomes? It's like people who move near an airport and then bitch because
of the airplane noise. Maybe every new member ought to serve a certain
length trial period and then decide if they like the various wanderings of
topics or can't tolerate it, in which case they'd be urged to seek a
different outlet for the emotions.

This is supposed to be a help group and the conversations do stray, but in
the end, the help is there, over and over again for those that ask for it.
So, I agree with trying to keep political and religious topics from a
situation where they become a cause of dissension but it's a great resource
and social center just as is.

I can see Bob's point to some extent. The topics DO tend to get WAY off
subject here from time to time with increasingly LESS GMC content. I have
been guilty of this myself, as have most all of the members. I was recently
told, along with Johnny Bridges, to "get a life, this is a GMC forum" by one
a grumpy "old crows" who woke up on the wrong side of his Mickey-D's coffee,
after adding a light hearted comment to a particularly contentious thread.
I think the site polices it's self fairly well, but I can't see how some of
these subjects that go on and on here sometimes (the recent one about
landlords and tenants is a good example) can continue for so long without
somebody telling the posters to "get a life" a little sooner.

I don't think a new forum is necessary. As several have pointed out, it
could have the potential to cause this one to die and the new one to become
just like this one. There is a GMC group on Facebook that, in my opinion,
should be a place for socializing. A former (kicked off) member of this
group has been trying to turn it into a tech group, and several more have
tried to help those with technical questions from time to time. Perhaps
that would be a better place for off topic stuff than here on this mostly
technical forum. I would sure hate to see the collective wisdom, knowledge,
and experience here lost to political correctness.

Just because we get out to Kitchener each year to visit our daughter and
her family. I goggled and see where Prescott is and found it - went thru
Prescott in 2012 when we drove accross Canada. There are 2 GMC'r s in
Montreal that we met - great guys.
Being new in GMC go to the Blacklist to find others in yoru area and see if
they have an rallies.
At the end of May there are a number of us starting out from Portland and
rolling into Detroit (ford Museum) then to Chicago and head west on Route
66.
Others plan on joining us somewhere along the way.

Best regards

Dwayne;

When your plans get further developed, let us know when you're going to be at the Ford museum in Dearborn. It would be great to see you again and I've also always wanted to see that museum myself.

A few years ago, I was looking for a RV that was larger than the Toyota Sunrader that I loved, but it's four cylinder engine held it back on mountains, so I decided I wanted something bigger but not one of the large, expensive SOBs. A search on the web and I saw a picture of a GMC that I really liked and the second search found this forum which is what closed the deal for me and gave me the confidence to go ahead and purchase my Eleganza. It isn't too often that I post here, but I do read every single day. I feel like the forum is more like guys sitting around the campfire talking about the GMCs and of course other things that, to me, makes it more informative on a wide range of subjects such as battery charging problems AND tatoos , and of course the wasps. I guess I'm looking for technical and entertainment, and I get them both here. It may appear that some people dominate the threads, but these are the folks with the most knowledge and the ones I learn the most from. Since I'm still working on my GMC and with family medical problems, I haven't been able to attend any rallies yet, so this forum is my rally and I like sitting around reading for now, and getting to know everyone. The only problem with this forum is that I somehow missed the part where Rob Mueller doesn't have an Aussie accent and Chuck Boyd's "barn" is stuffed with GMC motor homes, old Chevy's, and eighteen wheelers.

Luckily, most GMC questions have been asked and answered. Usually I
mine the archives and various GMC websites for serious technical
questions. I've found the results are generally better than posting for
answers on GMCnet. Once I even accidentally found a backdoor to the
GMCMI newsletters. It's true enough that lately GMCnet has strayed from
its intended purpose and many GMC threads get hijacked into non GMC
territory. No problem, deleting is easy & quick with Thunderbird email
app. As easy as surfing past TV channels with all the babbling
progressives and their alleged mortal enemies. Most of whom are more
concerned with their viewer ratings than the cause they support. It's a
full time job living my own life so I don't have time for that stuff.

I've been flamed on GMCnet once or twice but my ego's plenty big enough
for that so no offense taken as long as it's mutual. It looks like I've
been demoted to associate member of GMCMI but am too insensitive to even
feel the effects. I've had several of my dumb thoughts corrected by
more astute members and am thankful for the education. It was most
peculiar though when I unknowingly committed the two most cardinal sins
of the GMCnet apostate. On one occasion pointed out a defect in a
vendor supplied part and asked for advice. On the other occasion dared
to specify a part number. It's strange that two of the most useful
aspects of any technical interest forum are met with such stiff
opposition. Still, overall, it's worth my while to read GMCnet and I
will continue to do so. I especially enjoy the photosite.

Contrary to Elder Ken Henderson's wise advice, I'm not grabbing a snippet
about this thread. (By the way, this got started after some concern was
expressed regarding hijacking of the thread, expression of personal
religious and political opinions, and other meaningful and insignificant
verbiage).

I first encountered the GMCNet in 2007 if not before. I had been on other
technical forums (corporate and independent). I went through the phase of
concern about the lack of self or managed guidance. Notice, I said "went".
Been there, done that. But, once you get past that point the ride is pretty
nice. As another respondent pointed out, there's technical and entertaining
information.

Along the way you also learn whose comments to read, whose to "consider the
source," whose to ignore, and whose to automatically send to the trash (if
using email).

The most powerful monitoring is something you, yourself can do -- if you
don't like something, ignore it and move on.

This environment is somewhat unique; it has it's own personality. That
personality comes to life when you attend a major rally. Along the way you
get to learn, unlearn, smile, and grimace. Where else can you get it all at
one low price?

By the way, thanks Jerry Sitzlar, Larry Dilk, Hen Henderson, Kerry
Pinkerton, Matt Colie, Rob Mueller, and many others for material to consider
in my response.

It is kinda like tv. I have dish premium. 165 channels of KRAP. I figured
somethin' out on my own. Dang T.V. set has an on/off button for a reason.
When I have " just had enuf of it" , I exercise that option, put on some
BONNIE RAIT or ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL or RAY PRICE AND WILLIE LIVE, pour a
couple of fingers and kick back and just enjoy life with my new bride,
Judy. We are from the same generation, share common interests, love people
and GMC 'n. Life is too short to get your knickers in a knot too often.
Please take time to live each day to the max. Love one another, watch your
friends and family close, your enemies closer. Have a great rest of the
year, and you just might give some thought to those New Years Resolutions.
Let's all resolve to use these GMC Motor Homes, not let em set and die from
neglect.

Ken, I understand your position, and frankly if the forum was not here and only the mail list I probably wouldn't be here myself. been there done that.

Bottom line, the fragmentation and hijacking is mostly unintended here, but the dual system causes it. I am just advocating the more modern and functional of the two.

It is nice to see photos IN the posts, not having to click a link to go find it elsewhere. Makes for more fulfilling content.

Chris,

Sorry to break the news to you, but without the original GMCNet email list,
I probably would not be reading or posting. The Forum just doesn't light
my candle. I have tried it quite a bit ever since the day Eugene started
it but could never learn to like it. I'm know I'm not alone.

I do try to adhere to a couple of simple rules that many seem to forget:

1. Never hijack athread.

2. Trim quotes to the minimum necessary to understanding the reply.

As for threading, I find GMail almost perfect for my use -- It threads on
message subject, not some hidden identifier, so hijacking doesn't really
hurt much.

JMHO,

I second Chris' comments. I can't imagine why someone would prefer to have their e-mail inbox flooded versus scrolling through a forum for interesting infotainment. And if someone pipes up with a comment we don't agree with theologically or philosophically then we should just chalk it up to the kinds of differences that make the world go round and remember we're just a bunch of folks trying to keep our slick looking motorhomes on the road, not try to be the final judge of absolute right and wrong.

Dwayne,

If you can and you have not already been - plan to see The Gilmore Museum (Link below) on the way to Detroit, MI.
You should plan a full day there.

It is just east of Kalamazoo, MI and only 2.5 hours west of Detroit. I was in awe and truly enjoyed myself when I went in July 2013. They have a Tucker, a complete Tucker power plant on a stand and the Tucker office. COOL!!!

They even have a small building, like a one room school house, that is full of 20's - 40's fancy radiator caps.

Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage.

It's a non issue until someone posts a question about how to do it or where to see them, and then we have a looooong hijacked thread about that...

yes, I can link photos too, but the sysop doesn't want us doing that, I thought. Bandwidth costs and all...

All,

My post was an attempt to offer a possible alternative to splitting the group, and give a perspective of a new guy. I could really care less about everybody else's opinion of politics or religion. Again, I would gladly converse with a snake handling right wing vegan marxist Moonie if they would share how they get 15 MPG in a GMC without spending "Amigo money".

If I had to pick a nit it would be the threadjacking. A recent post on headlights is a good example. I'm not going to leave over it, but it is annoying.

I have been a member of e-mail lists. None of these problems are new. If the email list is the issue, there is etiquette when posting or responding off-topic on email.

Change the subject of your reply:
Original Subject - "Lighting"
OFF Topic reply subject - "was Lighting now Mexico Sucks"

Preface subject of off topic posts with OT:
"OT Miley Cyrus joins convent - done with sex"

And, for the record, a post on a member recovering from, or succumbing to, an illness, or in need of non-technical assistance, is not off topic.

By the same accord it is bad form to flame a properly titled post because you don't like the subject or conversation - just don't read it.

A little Rodney King for everyone this Holiday season:

"Can't we all just get along?"

Please enjoy (insert the name of your seasonal/religious/non-religious celebration here) Very Happy

Yes, Chris beat me to it with his tag line.

Just a reminder, simply changing the subject title doesn't start a new topic, it will remain the same thread in the forum, just with a different name on that post. The new topic needs to be started as a new topic. As a 95/5 emailer/forum user it doesn't really affect me, but I think it's important to the forum users.

That's good to hear. Will Justin Bieber be going into seclusion soon at a
monastery? I sure hope so.

BTW, my 1978 GMC Royale never got close to 9 mpg.

I find the collective smarts of our group far excedes the usefull info of the people on other car forums. We have a wide knowledge base in almost all fields if you connect with the right brain here. For example I'll probably get a more accurate Jeep response here if I sneak it in as a Toad post than if I go to a Jeep forum.

On our 14500 mile trip last year. Over mountains and prairie plus desert we
averaged just over 10mpg in canadian gallons and just under 10 in usa gal.
We drove whatever speed limit was allowed plus 5 mpg
