IMO, the solution is simple. If someone posts something that falls in the political, religious, or other nontopic spectrum, NOBODY RESPONDS. Or, everyone responds with "YOU ARE OFF TOPIIC. It then dies it's own natural death, and we are back to GMC tech, JWIT

I am co-owner and administrator of a pretty strict metal shaping site. There are 4 administrators and we probably average 2 hours a day of "management" time. It's a pretty big effort and if we weren't old farts with a lot of time on our hands, it would never work. We ONLY allow discussion about on topic metal shaping with a rare thread if a significant member passes away. No politics, no religion, no chat. Kind of sterile actually. But we created our site as an alternative to another metal shaping site that had become very loose and chatty.
What you are missing is the link from the email list and the forum. MOST the thread creep comes from email users who have a bit more difficulty posting in the correct forum thread with their reply. We've all seen a thread on X suddenly take a hard left turn into a totally different topic because someone makes a comment that is a bit off subject and the email guys just start replying to the original thread about a 77 Royale with 12K miles for 1200 bucks and start discussing ridding the poop mountain in the black tank. Once the original off topic post goes out on the email list, the listers just reply to the content and miss the part about thread title.
Regardless, the email/forum aspect of GMCNet is unique and is a very powerful function that gives us input from a lot of folks who, for various reasons, WON'T do a forum but will do email. I, for one, would hate to loose that...or them.
There are lots of things wrong with the GMC community. We have way too many opinions on what is the best way to do everything, stuff documented everywhere on dozens of sites/blogs, all kinds of different formats, broken links, out of date price, WAY too many things described and documented in excruciating detail ...somewhere. And then there are all these folks who have different opinions than I do. Don't they know they're wrong??? God I love it! (And if you can't read the sarcasm in this paragraph, click the ignore button on me too}
We don't need another site, just a bit of tolerance. Ignore people you don't want to see, vote for whoever you want, worship whatever you want, choose a sexual orientation that cranks your 455 just realize that not everyone feels the same way you do. Those that do not have the same rights that you do.
Just my opinion, your mileage may vary...but it's probably still 8-10 mph.

YES, but instead of starting a new forum, which fragments things even more (we also seem to have a facebook one now) just get rid of the Mail List. Forum only.
The biggest problem around here is the hijacking, whether it intentional or not, the email list system here makes it too easy to reply to the forum as an email and change the content of the thread. It is maddening to try to follow a conversation around here, and when you see "[GMCnet]" in front of a heading, you know you are coming into the middle of the discussion...
A normal forum that does not have an email list does not have this problem...
...at all.
Other forums I frequent have categories, and there always is a "free for all" or "watering hole" category where people can talk about whatever they want, and the folks who only want the specific forum content can choose to avoid the category. Works perfectly, and these other forums have people from 10yr olds up to Seniors.
You can go back and find topics easily. For the most part, threads don't splinter and you can actually find the answer you are looking for without starting a new one.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but it's reality people, the mail list is old technology, and it fraqs the message organization. If everyone stopped using it and went to the forum, they would be converted and the topics would clean up and align around here. The off topic stuff would migrate to it's own category.

Oh, one last thing before I retire my soapbox today:
Y'all are upgrading your coaches, why not upgrade your online experience?
Now If there was no email list, I could have edited my previous post and not had to create a new one for the email users to see.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year.

I started following this forum because of the somewhat relaxed format and the friendly banter. I would hate to see that change. If you limit the content to strictly technical issues I think you would be doing the GMC community a great disservice. I would miss the trip reports, the battles with hornets, and even the opinions expressed that strongly disagree with mine. I vote to enjoy what we have and leave it as is, so that it remains an enjoyable sight to visit.

Awhile back my reply to a post caused a bit of a row. The first responder misunderstood my point, and it was all downhill from there. Even after I explained my intent and apologized for any offense.
I think this may be at least in part due to the email list users not seeing the same flow of posts as the forum users. Since I have never used that part of the forum I don't know exactly what they see, but they seem to zero in on individual posts much more than the entire thread.
My views differ from those many of you. That also means your views differ from mine. Some posts offend me, some irritate me, but most are informative or funny. I can deal with that.

I'll add that threads like this do some good for largely unmoderated forums. Bob was, IMHO, right about newer members finding the religion and politics off-putting. And while they (new members) may have to just deal with it, the older members need to be mindful of their roles as good stewards of GMC info and maybe think twice before posting.

I’m new here. This is a great site with tons of good people, help, information, and camaraderie!
We are called individuals for a reason. None of us are the same. Our likes and dislike will never be 100% compatible.
I learned in business long ago - one can never please everyone.
None of us are prefect. Or like the saying I came up with: “None of us are prefect; that is why they put erasers on pencils.”
Life is way too short!
I belong to many sites and there is No way that I could keep up with “every” email. That and not wanting to read every post; is why I choose to visit the sites themselves and view/read the post I choose and not to receive emails. And when I see things I don’t like in a thread/post, I deal with them like I do Commercials; I move on to something else - change the station to something I enjoy.
I think it is like a relationship that goes astray. Sometimes people think it is much easier to move on to a new relationship than it would be to stay and work out the old one. Not always so – After the excitement wears off – one has to put the same effort into the new relationship as they would the old one. I rather stay put with a good thing and use my effort/energy to support and help when I can.
If you belong to a good site and want to see it stay true to its mission statement; one might think about volunteering if you haven’t already.
As a site grows it can use more people to help it stay focused. The hard work has already been done in the foundation of the site and/or in its establishment and growth.
If I could spell worth a darn, was a better and faster reader - I would volunteer myself. However, I know my own limitations.
I'm a retired mechanic and I am more than happy to give advice, even call someone on my dime, when I know I can help.
I like to take this time to thank “EVERYONE” here for their help support and all they do to make this site what it is!
From those who setup this site to those who monitor it and even those who post helpful tips and advice.
I can only hope as time goes on and I learn more about the GMC that I can offer more help/support to others as I have received already.
God Bless one and all!
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.
Sincerely, Tony

I can see Bob's point to some extent. The topics DO tend to get WAY off subject here from time to time with increasingly LESS GMC content. I have been guilty of this myself, as have most all of the members. I was recently told, along with Johnny Bridges, to "get a life, this is a GMC forum" by one a grumpy "old crows" who woke up on the wrong side of his Mickey-D's coffee, after adding a light hearted comment to a particularly contentious thread. I think the site polices it's self fairly well, but I can't see how some of these subjects that go on and on here sometimes (the recent one about landlords and tenants is a good example) can continue for so long without somebody telling the posters to "get a life" a little sooner.
I don't think a new forum is necessary. As several have pointed out, it could have the potential to cause this one to die and the new one to become just like this one. There is a GMC group on Facebook that, in my opinion, should be a place for socializing. A former (kicked off) member of this group has been trying to turn it into a tech group, and several more have tried to help those with technical questions from time to time. Perhaps that would be a better place for off topic stuff than here on this mostly technical forum. I would sure hate to see the collective wisdom, knowledge, and experience here lost to political correctness.

Chris,
Sorry to break the news to you, but without the original GMCNet email list,
I probably would not be reading or posting. The Forum just doesn't light
my candle. I have tried it quite a bit ever since the day Eugene started
it but could never learn to like it. I'm know I'm not alone.
I do try to adhere to a couple of simple rules that many seem to forget:
1. Never hijack athread.
2. Trim quotes to the minimum necessary to understanding the reply.
As for threading, I find GMail almost perfect for my use -- It threads on
message subject, not some hidden identifier, so hijacking doesn't really
hurt much.
JMHO,
