Does anyone know if there is an iphone app for gas stations that have ethanol free fuel? Maybe one that has GPS as part of the app?

Larry,
Not too practical for mostof us to spend time looking for non ethanal fuel.
Best to make minor changes of parts onour coach.

The Sinclair staton in Rexburg Idaho has the Eth free gas. I hope to fuel the GMC there some day on my way over the pass into Jackson Hole Wyoming. Then on to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

That is my dream. Now back to reality. Got to work a few more years to shore up the old age fund for Mrs. Adams and put a few more kids through college.

My GMC will burn anything I can get, without even a hiccup. The appetite is boundless. Problems only occur from non-use, so I just have to drive it more often, like to the grocery store or use it for short trips instead of riding the motorcycle or one of any of my too numerous vehicles. I need the eth-free fuel for my chainsaws and other small engines and several cars that don't get used. And the nearest place I've heard about is about 25 miles away. I've got 7 vehicles and 10 small engines that are rarely run and will be attacked if I put the E-10 in there to run them and then leave them alone for another year.

Anybody have positive recommendations for additives that will protect these idle fuel systems?

Can't afford to keep my smarts in an Iphone and the support network(aka data plan) it requires, so I have to keep that stuff in my head. And it's getting crowded up there.

Hey Billitthead,
It sounds like you have the same challenges I do. Too many engines to keep protected. I think additives help but are not fool proof. I do use two different products together for every gallon of gas I buy for outdoor power equipment or motorcycles/ATV's. I double dose with Stabil and also add Star Tron Enzyme fuel treatment.

I have also installed a manual fuel shut off valve on anything where there is room to do so, and then running the engine until the carb is dry. For chain saws I have got in the habit of dumping the fuel after every use, and then running the engine until the carb is dry. I just dump the excess two stroke fuel and put it in an snomobile or motorcycle with a proper shut off valve.

Interestingly enough, the only fuel related problem I have had for many years was with a brand new Honda 2000 generator. I had it back to the Honda dealer for a service only 60 days after purchase. Required a carb rebuild and Honda would not cover it under warranty. They maintained that I had put bad fuel in it, and let it sit too long. I even sent them a picture of 10 empty stabil bottles lined up on a shelf in my barn. Very disappointed in Honda. At the time I was also the owner of 6 Honda motorcycles/ATV's. We have now moved to primarily to Kawasaki.

I have not put a shut off valve on the GMC yet as I have been driving it weekly, but only on Saturday mornings to run errands. Trying to get some test miles on it locally before heading out on the open highway. My strong preference is to shut the fuel off and run things out of gas.

Steve,
I can't get the last bit of fuel out of the carbs unless I'm running wide open and then pushing the whatever home. The slightest bit of fuel left in the carbs of my Honda CB550 Nighthawk trashed out the carbs (4 of 'em) and even after cleaning I never got it to run again. So now it sits out in the shed getting worse. Fortunately I ride the other motorcycle every couple of weeks. I've used the StaBil additive before and it works wonders in making old fuel usable when the old fuel was all gasoline, but it hasn't helped me with the ethanol fuel. My fuel injected vehicles don't have a problem with the injectors and regulators, but the eth fuel seems to trash out the pumps and tanks! I wish the company I invested a thousand dollars in had come up with an aftermarket kit to convert our ICEs to use hydrogen, as that is the actual power source in all of our various fuels, but apparently they wasted the money on something else and ran away, or maybe they drank it up...

I would like to invent the water cracking device to separate water into Hydrogen and Oxygen, and then use the ICE to put it back together, and then collect the exhaust and do it again but that may be dreamland or Star Trek technology that we are not allowed to have yet. Crying or Very Sad

Your Nighthawk story reminds me of another fuel problem I had on my 1982 Kawasaki GPZ 750. I have owned and been riding it for 30 years and never had a fuel problem until I had to use fuel with Ethanol. I had to have the carb's rebuilt for the first time in 30 years.

Yes, I ride an antique/vintage motorcycles as well as the antique trucks and RV's. I have thought about upgrading it to something modern, even made a couple of solid offers on bikes over the years but have just kept riding the old GPZ.

I had not thought too much about a small amount of residual gas left in a carb. I do subscribe to a good UTube channel, DonnyBoy73, the small engine Dr. He recommends running the fuel out, and then if there is a priming bulb, prime it a few times, and then start it again. I do this with weed wackers, but no priming bulb on the chain saws.

As far as old cars, I seem to have better luck with Holley carbs vs. Edelbrock or Q-Jet. I mostly run Holley Double Pumpers, as my goal is performance as opposed to economy. Pump more gas, go faster.

Steve,

If you clean the 550 carbs right and completely, it should run again. If you do try to run it again, look out the bottom of all four float bowls. See a little sideways screw? That is a float bowl drain that has been a Honda feature forever and may still be. (It was on my 1999 Honda 9.9 outboard.)

Hey Matt & Steve,
Talk about antiques...Everything I drive or ride is an antique! Nothing newer than 1988. The only exception is a 1998 Chrysler minivan, but it's not registered yet and so doesn't count. That's also the only one with a sodium azide rocket motor in the steering wheel waiting to blow me or wife into the back seat.

The Honda 550 is a 1983, only year for that model in that size. It has the drains that you mentioned Matt, and so do the other Hondas with the KeiHin carbs (is that the right name?). I only got it to ride while I repaired my other bike, and when I got the other one rideable, I left the 550 alone for about 2 months. After that, it would barely run above idle unless you brought the RPMs up very slowly. Getting the carbs off without breaking the old rubber airbox boots was difficult, but when I did I found the bowls just full of crap and corrosion. Cleaned them real good, but had to run a drill bit through the jets to get them clean. That may have been an error, even though I did it by hand, not with a drill. Never got it to run again...wanna buy it?

My other bike is a 1984 Honda CB650 SC...also a Nighthawk. Got enough power to scare the hell outta me whenever the devil takes charge. The 550 is a cruiser style bike, different seating position, swept back handlebars, stepped seat for the queen if she would ever ride with me.

It's out there, it's called 'electrolysis".  Unfortunately, it takes more power to split water apart than you will get burning it back together.  Until a couple of the basic laws of the universe are repealed, that's how it's gonna be.  No free lunch.

I'm thinking however, a set of solar cells at the house to crack water into hydrogen and oxygen, and let it run all the time.  You could store the gasses, and run the GMC on them some of the time.  The infrastructure would be 'spensive, but it might pay out if you are a young man.
