Hi Matt,

Lots of confusion surrounding headlight bulb type ID. The H designations originally referred to replaceable halogen lamps installed in a specially designed optical housing (reflector) sized to fit the same mounts as the then conventional sealed beam bulbs. Over time the H designation began to be used to describe the bulb mounting base itself - how it keyed into the housing, where the emitter(s) was located inside the reflector, etc. H4 is the designation for a bulb which has two emitters on different optical centers, one that focuses upward towards the top of the reflector to shine the beam down for low beams with a sharp top cutoff so as not to blind oncoming drivers. The other emitter focuses downward towards the bottom of the reflector to shine the beam up to project further down the road. Often the H4 halogens were built with a metal baffle to keep the light from the low beam emitter from shining downward in the reflector to cut down on glare.

When HID (high intensity discharge) lighting technology was applied to auto headlights, the same H designations were used for HID emitters that would fit into the same reflectors used for the halogen emitters with the emitters in the same relative location so the pattern of the light coming out of the reflector would be the same as with the halogens, only much brighter at a lower amps. One style of HID H4 emitter (called Bi-Xenon) used a single emitter source and moved magnetically a shutter to cover or uncover the bottom of the emitter allowing light to spill downward onto the reflector for high beams. Still had lots of spill over so tended to blind oncoming drivers a bit even on low beams. If that solenoid failed you either had no low beams or high beams all the time depending on the position of the shutter at failure.

The LED bulbs that I used to replace the HID bulbs in my 7" round Hella reflectors on the Royale has two Cree CXA1512 emitters mounted on a cast aluminum frame with the H4 keying and emitter positioning. One is on the top of the cast frame that when illuminated throws light up to the top of the reflector and then down with the sharp cut off for low beams. There is a second emitter on the bottom of the cast frame that when illuminated throws light down to the bottom of the reflector and then upward for high beams. So, just like a two filament sealed beam headlight, or a two emitter halogen, these LED "bulbs" also feature two emitters shining in the low and high beam optical paths.

Here is the link to where I purchased mine:

While the site name implies these are made by Phillips, they appear to be well made generic Chinese units. I have seen what appear to be similar units on other sites including Amazon for varying prices. Hope this helps.

As to the killings in Rocky Point Mexico (a resort community on the tip of Baja about an hour south of the AZ border), the news reports now indicate that among those killed was the NW Mexico king pin of one of the most notorious drug cartels. The raid was carried out by the MX military along with the Federal and Sonoran police. The last time we were there we were pleasantly surprised to see a strong military presence with heles in the air, gun boats in the harbor, quads on the beach and brand new hum-vs sporting heavy fire power patrolling the streets and harbor areas as apparently the drug runners had begun to use Rocky Point as an offloading point for their drug hauling submarines. The Federal government had also begun to pour money into Rocky Point to pave the roads, modernize the water, sewer and power systems, etc. The governors of Sonora, MX and AZ were meeting there to jointly extend the state of Sonora "no hassle" zone for American tourists. No border registrati
on of vehicles, no people looking for hand outs at every stop, no check points for gringos if you stay in the state of Sonora.

Jerry,

I am bit confused.
H4 is Halogen 4 a dual beam bulb that replaced the #4 conventional headlight (glass) bulb decades ago. (And with good reason.)
So, What H4 has a mechanical (solenoid) to move the light source?
Are you saying that the light engines (real HID) to replace an H4 have this solenoid deal?
Boy, talk about inviting a failure.... Heat and weather.....

An yes, if the press ever released the full story of tourist deaths/murders in Mexico, it would about end that business.
