Not GMC but pretty dang interesting. This bridge in Durham NC, has a couple traffic cameras that capture the action. Also apparently has a warning system that flashes caution lights at too tall loads.

Watch what happens to the RVs who go through it.

I was once in a car heading opposite direction while 2 dudes in a 24' bobtail did the front wheels of the ground trick. I had a birds eye view of their faces as it unfolded. Priceless

That bridge actually has its own website.
11foot8.com

I like the fact the railroad installed a guard beam the last time they rebuilt the bridge and have had to replace that beam it since.

I like the 5er that cleaned off his roof top unit and just kept on going. I don't recall what year that is in.

Gene,

The rail line is heavily traveled, the rails were there before the road was paved and it is not federal highway, it is not (supposed to be) a truck route. Upstream both ways are height detectors that start the flashing lights to warn drivers that they are over height. You just can't fix stupid.

I can hear the conversation at the campground that night...

I think maybe you missed the point that the slow dip is already doing the driving. Wink

Gene,

You didn't look at all the years of recordings, it is more like 60 and that is only since the site builder started recording and that, most are only in daylight.

The allowance for user error in this case is the guard beam.

What you really don't know is how many saw the warning and were smart enough to change the route.

There's a website, 11foot8.com or some such. Guy has an office that
overlooks it, and he runs a camera. His website says he gets about one a
month, but every day trucks see the warning lights and turn away down the
side street.

Sean,

Well spotted! Sydney has a lot of tunnels that go under the city it was the only way to help ease traffic as widening roads to
accommodate additional lanes was virtually impossible.

For some reason the video wouldn't play on my pc so here's a link to the YouTube version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFFJk1-XCkk

I got a kick out of the guy from the trucking industry who noted that they should be consulted when infrastructure is built. I can
tell you what they'd want - idiot proof tunnels!

Regards,
Rob M.

Good find, Kerry. There were some doozies in there. I particularly liked the 5th wheel that slowed down and slowly scraped everything off of the roof.

In my home town there's a similar but smaller train overpass. I had picked up a step van and drove it home on my usual route without thinking about it. It dawned on me just as I was passing under the overpass that I had a roof vent that was taller than the 9' step van and the sign said the overpass had 9' clearance. I was waiting to hear the crunch and rending of metal, but nothing happened. The next day I went back to measure and the there was 10' of clearance. I was always thankful that they lied to me!

Another guy wasn't so lucky. He was driving a dump truck with the bed partially elevated. When the front of the bed hit the overpass it pivoted the cab up off the ground and squashed him against the underside of the bridge. That's probably when they started lying about the clearance.

Richard

Some years back they had just opened the I565 interstate spur into Huntsville. A wheeled crane, probably 40 tons, had the crane front end come off it's cradle and lock. The crane boom hit the brand new 4 lane overpass doing about 60mph. The crane stopped in 8.5 feed from 60mph, a considerable G force. Driver was unhurt but it moved the entire interstate bridge...all 4 lanes of it...4 feet and shut down the new interstate for several months while they repaired the bridge.

This was the overpass leading into the main gate at Redstone Arsenal and 10+ cars were on the bridge when it happened. Exciting times in the Old South for them.

Google "backhoe hits overpass" and check out the carnage that can be done by large items trying to squeeze under a low structure. The first two results are amazing. One overpass almost sliced in two, and another knocked completely off its supports.
