When I followed George B's link to hear his spin tech muffler this video was recommended I had never seen this coach before. 14 minute montage of the restomod of a 77 royale...in the Netherlands, fantastic job. I searched his name but couldn't find any posts from him. Make sure your speakers are on!

Very nice restoration. Not sure whether a 70's vehicle makes a good platform for a 50's diner theme. Especially a Royale. An older Travco would have made better sense to me. I believe there was another video of this restoration floating on Youtube only it had lots of irritating scene transitions. Solely my opinion, to each his own.

Is that vinyl wrap he used instead of paint? I wonder how easy that would be...

Yes, I believe it was wrapped instead of painted. With the exception of the end caps there's not too many tight curves to deal with.

I agree with Richard. I can appreciate the work that was put into this but I thing it would look better in something like a '54 Flxible bus.
Heck of allot of nice work went on though. Kudos!

Agreed, Maybe a flat nose Revcon or Clark Cortez.

I took particular interest in this as it is the same layout as my 78 Royale. I like the idea of an L shaped dinette like he did, but I don't know what I would do with the propane bottle that is currently under one of the dinette seats. I see this coach has the propane access just to the right of the entry door and he has obviously removed the tank for his new dinette. Maybe just turned it the other direction so it is under the new seat?

While I am in no rush to address the exterior of my coach, I have thought about a partial wrap. The original Imron paint is still pretty good on mine and I think it will buff out ok but the vinyl stripes look horrible and I understand they are very difficult to remove. I would consider buffing/polishing my original Imron paint and then doing a partial vinyl wrap over the existing stripes, maybe even just new slightly wider vinyl stripes over the existing stripes plus some extra graphics in the rear. I think I could kick the appearance up a few notches for just a few bucks.

I have seen pictures of someone who turned the propane tank sideways and filled it through the original opening with 90 degree adapters.

The last part of 1978 they switched paints to a lesser paint... not Imron. Not many coaches got this. (My 1978 did.) I had problems with the paint coming up with the stripes and there are repaired runs in the OEM paint. How "late" is your '78?

Is the actual vinyl of your stripes OK and the only the color is messed up and faded?

One thing I found was that acetone will remove the color from the stripes used on 1978 Coachman products. I wish I had just made my "three shades of brown" OEM stripes white, rather than removing them. Less work and the paint would still be on the coach.

Mike,
Thanks for the post. Very helpful. The sticker part of my stripes are in fairly good shape, just terribly faded. Interesting idea to remove the color with acetone. My original thought was to just do a wide blue stripe above the body side molding and a more narrow silver stripe below the body side molding just to cover up the existing stripes. I think it would lay pretty well.

I am not sure when my coach was made in 78 but it is TZE368V100779. My only indication that it was Imron paint was that Ken Frey had said that I got lucky in that is was Imron and in pretty good shape after 35 years, "must have spent some time indoors". I am fortunate that I can keep it under roof as well.

Fairly low number for a 1978. You most likely have the first Electro Level system and Imron paint.

Maybe after making the stripes white, you could repaint the vinyl stripes with paint made for vinyl?

Something tells me that it wouldn't wear/weather very well...

Interesting to see a video of Darren Paget's "Red Baron" in the que on the
right. Many hard to detect innovations in that 7,500 26' GMC. Note the
rear fuel door. Darren made one large tank with the cross member
integrated into the tank. 75 Gal IIRC.
