[GMCnet] Non-GMC - Tracker [message #232104] |

As a lot of you do, I have a Geo Tracker/Suzuki Sidekick for
a tow'd. I recently had a water leak which we tracked down
to be 2 of the 3 freeze plugs in the wet INTAKE MANIFOLD. I
have not been able to locate a source from replacements. GM
and Suzuki do not even show them in their parts catalog and
I contacted a dealer, who called Suzuki corporate and they
could not find them.
The only ones I found locally are marginally too big, the
ones removed are .785" (19.96 mm) and the closest I could
find locally were .8055" (20.46mm).
I already tried McMaster-Carr and they have nothing like this.

What year, model and engine in your Tracker?
My early 1st Gen Sidekicks (four of them,1989 to 1996, all have "four banger" g16 and J18 motors) do not have any coolant INSIDE the intake. They all have coolant lines to several items mounted _TO_ the intake.
check Southwest Suzuki for tracker parts... just call it a Sidekick or Vitara. (depending on year.) <http://www.oemsuzukiparts.com/>

Hi Terry
Try searching for a Dorman 555-101, both Jeg's and Summit stock them.

Very definitely a wet manifold, possibly a California smog
requirement

Tried them (and several other Suzuki/Tracker places). They
all use the same search tool and none of them list the
freeze plugs.

8 valve motor. The one I haven't really worked on, as I only have it in my 1994 "parts car." You are correct that both G16 motors have the thermostats in front of the intake manifold. I just looked at the 8 valve in the parts car... looks like the coolant does run farther aft than on the 16 valve. It is the J18 that I have been working on lately has the thermostat in the water pump housing... no coolant in the intake. To many things going on at once... at least I am not confused with the 403 I messed up lately.
Anyway, if the Dorman 555-101's do not work out, check out this forum: <http://www.suzuki-forums.com/suzuki-sidekick-escudo-vitara-geo-tracker/>
There a couple of good posters there... but many others to sort through. (Watch out for that "m000035" as he gets confused from time to time. )

Found the Dorman ones locally, too big. Same size (20.54mm)
as the ones I bought Saturday.

As a last resort, you can always use the rubber plugs that expand as you
tighten them down. Another option would be stop by a machine shop and have
them make you some out of brass stock. Very simply, easy machine work
involved.

When I lived in Alamorgodo NM, my buddy who had a auto repair shop called me in to look at a car on his rack. The guy had lost a freeze plug in the wilds of Mexico. Apparently the mechanic down there had carved a plug out of wood and pounded it into the hole; it expanded to a very tight fit when it got wet. It was still holding and did not need replacement. You could consider a pocket knife and a tapered leg from an old chair for a starting point if all else failed!
