I don't really know much about the floors in these coaches, but I have a friend who used to make plywood floors for B52 bombers (yes, they had plywood floors). We were talking about the floors one day and mentioned that with a good set of plans he could make the floor panels.

I'm curious if there would any demand for this, and if the various years and models all use the same floorboards, just with cutouts for their specific baths and such.

David,
Not to put a hole in your boat, but I dont think that there is much call for pre made floor panels. The cost to ship would be tremendous as it is 1 inch thick material and very heavy. Cheaper to get it from your local supply store for the section that you need to make and replace.

I wasn't looking at it as a money making operation, more of a service if there was a need. I have seen a few posts regarding routing out plywood etc and thought maybe folks who didn't have the tools/skill to do this would like the option.

Interesting, in the 3000 hours in the B-52 all I remember walking on (actually crawling) was aluminum.

Len,

From the cockpit to the tail gunner's compartment was a LONG crawl!

Maybe the floors were for the Spruce Goose? ;-)

I may have the wrong plane, but I don't think so. I'll double check. Maybe aluminum skin over wood floor?

Huge job. The coach must be gutted and the existing floor removed. Mine
was riveted and glued down real well. Not many folks are going to
attempt this. Have you sourced plywood in 5' wide sheets?

David,

There might be a market for the front cockpit floor pieces, since they seem (to me) to be the most commonly rotted areas.

Leigh Harrison offered them at one time -- since he no longer shows them on his web site it may indicate lack of demand.

Oops, my mistake. It was the KC-135.

"The floors in a KC-135 aircraft have over 250 different floorboard part numbers for 27 different models and types and each individual order for floorboards will have different tail numbers. Floorboards are composed of exterior grade 5-ply Douglas fir plywood, per commercial product specifications."

David,

I was based at Westover AFB in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts from 1965-1967 where I worked on C & D model B-52's, KC-135's; and
KC-97's.

Now that you provided the info below I VAGUELY remember the floor in KC-135's being painted gray.

The KC-135 >did< have a plywood floor.  At one point it was a major concern because it's construction - the glue or the fireproofing or the diomension or something - made it a one - off and most of them were getting pretty ratty.

The aircraft commander would have to descend to below 10,000 feet for the gunner to be able to make that trtip to the forward comparment.

I ended up with somewhere around 16 to 18 hundred hours in the B-52s, mostly F models.

Len,

I was a Mechanical Accessories Repairman and was riding the launch truck one day when we got called to a '52 with "black smoke" in
the cockpit.

I got out of the truck ran over to the hatch and popped it open; a dense black cloud billowed out!

I took a deep breath and climbed up into the Navigator and Bombardiers compartment then quickly up to the flight deck. It got worse.
When I got upstairs the pilot / co-pilot and EWO were all wearing their O2 masks. The pilot pulled his off for a second and asked;
"can we take the aircraft?" I felt like saying; "are you nuts?" but said "NO WAY - Shut it down!" That's a SAC crew.

On Okinawa years later I was once again in the launch truck and was called to a C-133. I climbed up to the flight station where the
co-pilot showed me that the glass in the O2 quantity gage was cracked. He said he wouldn't take the aircraft because of the problem.
I asked him why. He noted he might cut his finger on the cracked glass. That's a MAC crew.

Now I don't have to remember to tell you the story.

Regards,
Rob M.

Len,

I was a Mechanical Accessories Repairman and was riding the launch truck one
day when we got called to a '52 with "black smoke" in
the cockpit.

I got out of the truck ran over to the hatch and popped it open; a dense
black cloud billowed out!

I took a deep breath and climbed up into the Navigator and Bombardiers
compartment then quickly up to the flight deck. It got worse.
When I got upstairs the pilot / co-pilot and EWO were all wearing their O2
masks. The pilot pulled his off for a second and asked;
"can we take the aircraft?" I felt like saying; "are you nuts?" but said "NO
WAY - Shut it down!" That's a SAC crew.

On Okinawa years later I was once again in the launch truck and was called
to a C-133. I climbed up to the flight station where the
co-pilot showed me that the glass in the O2 quantity gage was cracked. He
said he wouldn't take the aircraft because of the problem.
I asked him why. He noted he might cut his finger on the cracked glass.
That's a MAC crew.

Now I don't have to remember to tell you the story.

Regards,
Rob M.

Len, that crawl threw the bomb bay on that narrow cat walk looks pretty scary, march air museum has a B52 , you can stand under the Bombay and see the catwalk. Fortunately my experience with the B52 was limited to working on the engines. That was one tough job the air crews had. You have my total respect.

Have a great day, larry c.

The one at March is a "D" model, a tall tail like the A thru F models. The
cat walk was to get the gunner, who lived in the tail up front if the need
arises.

If I recall correctly the G and H model had the same catwalk but I don't
remember if it went to the tail. Supposedly you could go back and check for
hung munitions after going thru the door behind the instructor navigator's
seat, past the front gear, thru another door to the bomb bay.
