G'day,

Just watched the late news and noted that Chevy SS is being built by Holden and exported to the USA!

You beat me to it.

Are the wheels on the top or the bottom? If the wheels are on the top then you would not have to switch the steering wheel side when they arrive here.

I still haven't figured out how those people manage to hang upside down and drive on the wrong side of the road.

I figured out why Rob is so tall. He spends 6 months of the year hanging up side down.

Holden has some great looking cars. I believe they have a Ute (el camino) that is very nice.

Pretty much a Pontiac G8 with a bow-tie. Plus being a few years newer technology. I always wondered why the G8 wasn't marketed better...

If it can't be built in the US or Canada, Australia isn't bad. Lots of interesting cars from down under!

The G8 was one of the few domestic "brand" cars that I would have considered recently. It's too bad they killed it off - but with some luck this means we might getting a reprieve. There was a long period of domestic vehicles that could be summarized as "lipstick on a pig". Protectionism breeds complacency...

I think it's more important that products are made in a location that has a similar standard of living to that of USA and Canada. I prefer to buy items based on merit, rather than purely geographic terms. If items are built on the backs of underpaid labour - that's a problem for many reasons...

AFAIK - workers are well paid in Australia!

I did the GM G8 GT press event with Bob Lutz and was really impressed by the car. In typical GM fashion it was discontinued (this case orphaned)after a short run here. Glad to see it getting a rebadged new life. The Sky and Solstice from same event -- not so lucky.

John,

Since I've been living Downunder since 2002 I was not really aware of the Sky or Solstice. This year John Sharpe's next door
neighbor's son was selling a Sky. Looks wise it blew me away. I had NEVER seen one before. I had seen the Solstice but didn’t know
what it was. Frankly I really didn't find the front end of the Solstice stylish. The "curved / rounded" front end and incorporation
of the Pontiac "twin" grill wasn't very good looking. The front end of the Sky was reminiscent of a new Camaro which is HOT!

However, the "V" shaped back end of the Sky wasn't so hot either. I liked the straight back end of the Solstice so reckon if you
took the front end off the Sky and married it to the rear end of the Solstice you have a real winner!

David,

Yes, both Holden and Ford build UTE's.

The Holden UTE is basically the same as the SS Chevy but instead of the back seat they have a truck bed in the back. They are quite
popular and have seriously big / powerful power plants.

IIRC the first UTE was built by Ford back in the 1930's.

The suspension in Australian vehicles is setup for the road conditions here and the cars handle like sports cars. In fact one of the
Yanks interviewed during the news segment noted that it felt like a sports car!

So you all can help the US and Australian car makers - go buy a Chevy SS! ;-)

JR,

Leaving them RHD would prove to be interesting and exciting when drivers started down the "wrong" side of the road.

Ken,

Nah, the wheels are on the bottom. They considered putting them on the roof but the seat belt configuration was too complicated to
keep drivers and passengers in their seats and having to equip them with a special windshield that would turn everything right side
up was determined to make them non competitive cost wise.

You're right, after spending 8 months this year in the USA I find that while I haven't gotten any shorter my weight seems to have
shifted to a lower point on my body.

Mike,

Holden also built the GTO before Pontiac's demise.

It's a global market now-a-days, unfortunately the desire for cheap goods forces companies in the USA and other countries to
manufacture goods in the cheapest place possible.

The up side of that is that it raises the standard of living in the countries where the goods are manufactured, the downside is that
you loose skills in the "mother" country.

We may all complain about it but it's a fact of life.

Personally I rather have the USA manufacture and sell hi-tech products rather than stuffed animals.

I quite liked the Solstice GXP and the Sky Redline. But put the top down and open the trunk - you'd have a hard time fitting a six-pack of beer in there...

It's pathetic. How GM's engineering departments could come up with a trunk like that is baffling... They almost got it right.

If you haven't seen it - Google "Saturn Sky trunk"...

Sorry - I bought a Honda S2000...

Rob,

As noted in another one of my emails in this thread good or bad it's a Global Economy and it is doubtful that will change.

As far as vehicles go if I'm not mistaken most of the Japanese vehicle makers have set up factories in the USA. I don't know about
Hyundai or Kia.

I discovered even VW has a plant in the USA!

Yes, Aussies are well paid; currently the full-time minimum wage is $16.37 per hour or $622.20 per week or $32,354.40 per year.
Casuals covered by the national minimum wage get an extra 24% ($20.30 per hour).

Guys you may have to be quick and buy the SS as it could well be a collector item in the future due to the US parent company GM looking at shutting down the factory that makes them here in Elizabeth South Australia about 10 miles from where I live. The company has been propt up (I suspect the money has gone to the US to help prop up GM) by the state and federal government to the tune of many millions of dollars. The last request by Holdens was for 500 million dollars support and I think this will now end the company in Australia. Ford Australia is closing it's plants in the next couple of years and the only car manufacturer left in the country will be Toyota.
Answer to the problem is the Australian Government take over the ownership of Holdens (they have probably supported it with enough money to have had ownership) manufacture what is good cars for an affordable price. Apply a high duty (Tax) on imported vehicles making them retail way higher than the holden and the revenue made (tax) from those wishing to buy imported vehicles is directly injected into the industries manufacturing parts for the Holden cars.

Probably, GM felt that the G8 was cutting into Corvette sales.  Through the years, projects which a[ppeared to do this were either stopped or never brought to market.  Hence no turbo GT Fire-O, which would have eaten the 'vette of the day and spit pieces out.  And when the going got crooked, it would of disappeared.  They're like Suburbans/Tahoes - GM makes a lot of money off each unit.

I do.  Hyundai is in Montgomery, AL, and Kia is 80 miles NE on I-85  just across the Georgia line.  I pass Kia probably 6 times a year, HJyundai only 3 or 4.
