My original microwave works fine, but I'm sure newer ones are more energy efficient and less likely to give me cancer ;o)
Anyone still using there stock one?

I was never aware that GM had a factory microwave.
There is nothing in the very complete Parts Book, nor in the Maintenance Manual, nor in the Owner's Manuals, nor in the wiring diagrams.

My 78 came with a microwave that is described in the operators manual. I believe it was a Thermador. I replaced it and sold it to the late John Haper. It was built like a tank.

I dunno if the one in my coach is stock by Norris or from a PO. It's certainly old enough to be a '76 model, mechanical time and all. It does have a turntable. Actually, I don't think the spec for cabinet radiation has changed... it was incredibly low to begin with. As long as the door and interior aren't bent or filled with burnt food you're OK. The door channel is actually a tuned reject filter. I'd worry a hell of a lot more about the cellphone clamped to youe ear if non-ionizing radiation bothers you. Personally, I don't wear the bluetooth in the ear thingies for eight hours or so at a stretch..... I'll be interested in seeing (from the grave) how these people fare fifty years hence. Folks need to understand RF propogation and power before they get exorcised over a lot of things.

Bob, many of the Coachman upfitted Royale's had Magic Chef microwave ovens
under a 4 burner cooktop. Mine came with one, and it was D.O.A. I replaced
it with a cheapo. Could not get parts for the Magic Chef, which was really
a quality unit. It was all I could do to lift it. If the extra weight was
shielding, it had a bunch more of it than the one I replaced it with.

Thanks. I stand corrected. However it is not in the Maintenance Manual or parts book.
I have copies of the 73,75,76 nd 77 owners manuals and it isn't in those but I don't have a 1978.

Starting on page 45 of the operators manual it starts:
MICROWAVE OVEN
The optional Thermador microwave oven
operates on 120-volts AC (60 hertz) . Before
using the microwave oven be sure you read and
understand ALL of these instructions .
It does have a browner and was very powerfull. I just wanted a newer one that was easier to use. John Haper's timer crapped out so I shipped him nine. It sits in the spot that the oven normally occupies.

These things are full of surprises and many don't seem to be well documented. I've had plenty of arguments over this one with fellow coach owners

Our Royale has a 4 burner stove top with an oven under it. The Magic Chef microwave with browning element is to the right of the sink under the counter, right behind the driver's seat as in the photo I linked to earlier. In the Palm beach there is a 3 burner stove top with the same microwave under it, and no oven.

My 78 Royale by Coachman has the Magic Chef Micro, still works. My preference would be to have the regular oven and get a counter top or under cabinet micro. I have used the oven in the truck camper to bake and broil and I am afraid I will miss that capability in the GMC. I have been thinking to keep my eyes open for a Magic Chef four burner with a stove as a possible replacement to my current Microwave set up.

Our 78 Eleganza has the original microwave with browner. It works fine except the timer died last year.
I had an oven in my 75 Airstream trailer and might have used it twice (probably for a frozen pizza) in fifteen years so we don't really miss not having the oven.

One need to know if they have the 100% GM coach or those that were farmed our .
You currebt microwave is better than one you purchase at a store.
We sell ones that are for RV use as they have more tolerance to current fluctuations, or should I say "fluck you agians".

Our '73 23' did not come with a microwave. (Surprised?)
The way Mary likes to cook when we travel, I can't imagine being without a real oven. There are things that a microwave won't do well. Our Sloop didn't have an oven. The new non-pressure alcohol could barely make coffee, but then, it only had enough galley to qualify for PHRF. Mary never did much cooking onboard.
At first, We traveled with the microwave cargo strapped to the dinette table. (An effective, but not elegant solution for a coach not so equipped.) Then I hung it under the galley fan for a few seasons, and finally took out the galley vent fan, put a new bottom in the cabinet and hung the microwave tight underneath.
I replaced the fan with 3ea 80mm fans salvaged from dead computer power supplies. They are quieter and move more air than the original.
Sorry, no pictures, I work alone most of the time. Unless I know ahead of time that a job is one that others will have interest in seeing, I don't think to drag the camera out to the barn.
