Thanks Steve. I just bought this '76 Eleganza II with the Alco's. The tires have great tread but only used 3,000 miles in the last 5 years. The tires are Michelins and are older than 5 years with some dry rot. The backs don't look bad. I am replacing the fronts first and will do the back in the spring. Don't want a blow out on the front. We do some winter camping not more than 200 miles away.

Hard to argue against Michilin, however, Best is very subjective. My coach won't see many miles so I would not pay up for them while you might. Also research poly vs steel in the side walls. My personal opinion is the Michilin is likely one of the best but not best in all circumstances. If cost is no issue then go for it.

I wish I had aluminum wheels and a set of new Mischilin's!

I need to do the front bearings first and then maybe new tires in the spring. I know the smart money long term is to go aluminum but it is tempting to just buy 8 16.5's and mount six in the coach, one spare on a rim, and an additional unmounted spare in roof storage or at home all boxed for shipping to needed location?

Typically 5 years is not at the end of a tire's life--in fact they can safely be used up to 10 years. However if you see dry rot, then you need to be concerned. Sidewall cracks are not the end of the world, in fact Michelin advises you to measure and monitor the depth of the cracks to determine if they have any mileage left. I realize that it's better to be safe than sorry, but that logic applies to everything we do and at some point you need to use well proven data.

Bob,
congratulations on the coach. I am in a similar situation. Bought mine in August and have been getting all of the mechanicals up to a level of safety and hopefully some level of reliability. I have driven it about 200 miles just locally on 6 year old tires. Tread now has about 1,000 miles but aged out. Like you, best to replace all but fronts give me more concern. You are lucky to have gotten the aluminum wheels from the prior owner.
