Thanks for the walk through last week. It really helped me make the decision to move forward.. I brought the coach home this week and cleaned it up and drew the line in the sand by storing it in my shop… the slow deterioration stopped today.
Passenger side front tandem wheel had a dragging brake shoe on the way here from the storage lot, had not happened before. Had bad brakes to start with, so probably do it all… looks like the diverter valve (I think on the driver’s side rail in the engine compartment) looks original, and no leaks from any wheels so probably start with the master cyl and work back, including rubber lines.
Engine compartment a delight with no leaks either eng or trans. Made me smile, my friend that sold me the coach did the rebuild himself. Really good mechanic. Worked for years at Vasek BMW.
Installed the APC that Eugene Fisher sent me, made covers for the broken plastic overhead 14” vents and washed the puppy. Had no idea it would look so good, so wish I had scrubbed the roof. Next week.
Couple of window holds fell out, and the passenger side fixed main big window over the dinette area (Palm Beach) has slipped back about a half in so water sprayed in. Have to remove it and have re-installed. Have good glass guy contacts.
Will change out all coolant and oil next week, and hopefully start on making wooden stands to hold this puppy stable while I go through the brakes. Safety first.

Jack,
Welcome to the dark side. Note what Jim Bounds says. No matter what you have done non-professionally in your life, this project will test you like no other. Repair, diagnosis, expense, nostalgia, engineering, cult membership, these GMC motorhomes have everything.
I sure hope I can get a day off tomorrow to get going on my instrument panel repairs.

If the brake is hanging on only one wheel, your problem is NOT the Master Cylinder or the Combination valve. Go direct to that failing wheel and start there. It is something in that wheel or the brake line hose feeding that wheel that is your problem. The steel line feeding that wheel feeds both wheels on that side. There is a tee in the line (actually the hose) that feed both wheels. There is also another tee further up the steel line that feeds the two wheels on the other side. So if the problem was farther up the line it would affect more than one wheel.

Jack,
Just about any RV shop has replacements for the 14 plastic covers. If yours are original, they might not. Then you buy complete new vents for about 30$ and then spend your time on important things.
Read Rob Mueller's diagnosing the front end. It is posted at GMCES. That clank is usually something that is important.
It might be old, but there is no reason it can't be reliable.

Jack, loud clank from front end, followed by shimmy at 40 mph sounds like
lower ball joint or outer constant velocity u joints. Both need to be
checked out. The maintence manual (you do have one, don't you) has a very
explicit description for the check out procedure. Other things to check
while you are there are, front wheel bearings, drive axle nuts, tie rod
ends, lower control arm bushings, stabilizer bar control link bushings, and
just about everything else under there. Also, lower shock absorber studs on
the lower control arms are known to break with that kind of sound. Hope
this helps.

I've had my 78 Royale 403 for over a year and it seems like I find something to do on it every weekend. Fortunately, so far, none of it has been sad money, only happy money spent.
I've never gone on a trip with it yet, mostly because my gauges haven't worked, so I've spent the last month putting in a CIP dashboard with 8 gauges. So far, 4 of them work. When I get them all working, I will finally be ready to sign up in one or more of the clubs and go on a trip. I am looking forward to that.
No doubt about it, the support system with these vehicles is the best. I am glad when anyone adopts one of these vehicles. They are cool.
