I used to run up and down the interstates selling our machines. Pulled a 20' box trailer with a 1 ton dually. Never stopped at weigh stations. In thinking about it, I don't think I recall ever seeing an RV at a scale.

There was always a question about if we should stop or not. Technically I was commercial. A friend once told me, "You never know, all these guys go to the same training and all come away with different understandings of what they policy is."

I'll plead ignorance if they ever run me down.

That's my plan. I just needed to know which state needs a good actor. Or maybe my wife crying (works every time).

In some other forums they caution about using recreational vehicles with company logos, makes sense.

I wonder if that pertains to interstate stations or secondary highways. Our trucks do not stop at any stations even when trailering.

I got a ticket many years ago for failing to stop at a weigh station in a Toyota pick up in the Great State of Illinois. The judge threw out the ticket.

Also got one for driving an S-10 in Chicago on a road that said "commercial vehicles prohibited".

Sure glad I can't think of ANY reason I might ever need to visit Ilinois
again!

And I'll probably stop for those weigh stations after the first time they
chase me down and ticket me for NOT stopping. Wonder how many hundred
times I've passed them?

So what is a LARGE RECREATIONAL VECHICLE? Where do they draw the line?

I once had to pay double the toll to go over the Mackinac bridge because I had a 30 series (1T) pickup. I guess the yokals can do whatever they want, but the accepted DOT definition of commercial is a vehicle engaged in business purposes other than for the purpose of transporting personal goods. If you are on an interstate, you will have the law behind you, but if not, look out for wide interpretations that suit the local budget short falls.

Most minivans and even the Chrysler PT Cruiser are trucks--that's not the issue. The important word is "commercial"

Back in the 80's with my large class c with toad coming across country to cover my behind I pulled into every weigh station on I40W and I10E only to be directed straight through and back on the road without stopping. Did the same thing with a Uhaul and towed vehicle from NE to SE with same results and that was recent. But things change daily.

>I NEVER stop in a motorhome or a pick up.

Though the Sprinter came titled as a passenger van, I put commercial truck plates w/ weight for towing a small backhoe on it. It has windows all the way around, so the profile is that of a van. No signs. No logos. I still blow by the weigh station just south of town on (in)famous US17, though I *might* pull in if I had the backhoe trailered.

>waved through

Back in the 60s we used to sell tons of plumber's lead. One "early-early morning" shipment was coming in on a 40' flatbed and it was severely overweight. But the ingots were spread out evenly over the deck, so it was only a few inches high. It was still early-early but NC had the scales open. The rig pulled in but the officer glanced at the flatbed and waved him through.

Once upon a time in about '74 or '75 sevearl of us were headed South on I-75 in Florida in an Econoline van.   White unmarked E200 'plumber's van'.  Went past a weuigh station and some poot in a uniform ran out into the hiway and waved us toward the station.  So I cut across the grass and turned on the lane only to be waved past by the poot in uniform by the scales.  Never did figure out what the idea was.

And tolls? They never know. Technically we are 2 axles, the rear being an immaginary line through the bogies with a hinged swing leading and trailing that axle. I'm not commercial in the TZE so I motor past the coupe.

John,

You are actually correct, but he reason you state is in error. I don't have the definition handy anymore (and I am not all sure I could find it any time soon), but the real definition is based on how many places the wheels (however arranged) support the chassis. In the case of a GMC the rear is one (1/uno/un/ein/ichi), but don't trying to argue the point at a toll booth. They can manage to count tires in side view (barely) and can't manage to even count total tires on the ground.

The Mackinac Bridge has charge me for three axles for all but our first transit in 2006. So, we pay the same toll as a 43000# Greyhound bus. It is now 5$/"axle", when they boost it again (supposed to happen next year) to 7$ per non-passcar axle, it will actually be more cost effective for me to buy the additional Canadian gas and cross back into the states in Detroit at 5.00$ (USorCA). This is largely because we live so close to the crossing. I still hate bring the coach back into the states in Detroit, but it be worth just so I can write another note to the Mackinac Bridge people.

Some places have a scale in the road that approaches a toll station. We would win on that one.

Matt

Every year, at Thanksgiving Weekend, My son and I cross the state line from California back into Arizona, on I-10 at Yuma driving the pictured rigs:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/towing-etc/p37694-dune-trip-camp-2010.html

Before I got the GMC, we would drive the very commercial looking Dodge, loaded with tent camping gear and all our supplies for the sand dune trip, towing the trailer. I was always nervous about blowing by the weigh station, but always did it with no consequences.

A few years ago, I asked a truck driver friend about that. He said he wouldn't stop, and if they did chase him down, he would explain that it was a 'play weekend' and the truck was not being used for commercial purposes.

I have been doing this for close to 40 years with various trucks and motor homes.

~ A County can permit the Police and
Magistrates (JPs)to take a percentage
of the revenue that is generated by
the Tickets in Illinois, S Carolina,
Texas. also some counties in Florida,
W Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas,
and Mississippi.

Christmas Day 1996 we were pulling a

a disgruntled DOT Officer that had to

a trucker that was pulling an empty

We were both taken to the Magistrate
and he promptly dismissed both of our
