Four Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec) are issuing EDLs to Canadian citizens. Canadian citizens can present an EDL when entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry.

All new (not renewal) driver's licenses issued here are "enhanced" but they are not acceptable to the DHS. This is why I carry the border crossing card issued by the feds and a normal driver's license.

A passport will always work.
I was just listing alternatives for ground and sea border crossing between the US and Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean countries.
