You better check those lug nuts. Best to do it unloaded (jacked up) and
have a helper hold the brake pedal and steering wheel. Run the engine
for power assist on the brakes. Brake dust should NOT be radiating from
the lug nuts, almost an impossible travel path. The black dust is
probably powdered metal. If any nuts are loose, take them all off and
clean the wheel and hub of ANYTHING in between the two. You can wipe the
hub and the back of the wheel with a rag moistened with WD-40 or similar
to retard the rusting, but keep the two surfaces very clean. Then torque
them down to about 250 ft. lbs.. Check the play in the bearings after
that and look inside that dust cap for excessive rust dust! The tip of
the axle breaking off has run me aground and so far cost me $700 in new
and used parts (& shipping) just to get back to the way it was.
