I want to upgrade our braking performance, but I don't want to go into the expense of upgrading to disc brakes on the rears.

Is there a written description of the braking system upgrade with the 80 mm calipers and oversized wheel cylinders? What are the parts involved, including part numbers and sources?

Is the carbon / metallic brake lining considered to be the best choice? Again, part numbers and sources?

Don't expect miracles. Years back I put on 80 mm front calipers and then oversize wheel cylinders on the mid axle. I didn't really notice much braking improvement.

Then I put disc brakes on the rear and finally saw a lot of improvement.

It will be an expense but it worked well for me.

Steve,
There are lot of basic things one should do without spending big bucks.
Starting with a vacuum booster as a start.
Standard master cylinder is fine as it is.
Combination valve(prop.valve) should be replaced if it is original.
Check and clean the rear brakes as they have self adjusters.
Lot of you are unaware that one need to back up rapidly then slm on the brake to set the self adjusters if it is used infrequently.
Some shops are known to remove the self adjusters without letting owner know.
Carbon Metalic shoes have worked well, but when cold, they do not stop as well. These are no longer available.
We now carry a Ceramic Shoes that stop well when cold as well as hot.
Front pads, there are several Carbon metallic.
If you want great stopping from a Ceramic pad, we have the Yellow pads.It is pricy.
One should change the rubber hoses as the 35 year old hoses tend collapse in .
At the same time flush out the brake fluid as it invites moisture as time goes by.

Whenever pumping the brakes for bleeding, be sure to use a 2x4 board under the peddle to avoid too long of a stroke.
The new units are notorious for having problems related to long strokes.
Grace does not know much about long strokes.

There is adequate braking capability in the OEM disks and drums. You just need to maintain the vehicle weight distribution while braking.

You can add rear disks later, if you still want to after experiencing the improvement to the drum brakes.

I now have about 10K miles on the Drum/Drum reaction arm rear.

We have three times been forced into testing the capability of the system, I am pleased to report that the Jeep, the Lexus and the Cadillac are all un-altered. With the original braking, all would have been instantly modified to a greater or lesser extent.

If you want to know more about this, please contact me directly as this is not a sales forum. I am just a single owner, I don't want to appear that I am selling this kit.

Steve--I'm one of the few here that feels the original setup is ok if maintained and adjusted correctly. I think Jim K hit the right stuff to look at. I have no doubts that the various upgrades are also OK, but one thing will lead to another if you go that route and before you know it, you will probably have a totally different ssytem.

Thank you. I'm very sorry you have lost your friends. May they rest in peace knowing they have helped save this world for us and our cherished freedoms. I remember the story of Daniel Inoye, MOH recipient, first Japanese-American Senator, Medal of Freedom winner, who recently died. Good enough for me.
