My family is planning our second annual Thanksgiving haul to family in the Lake Okeechobee area. I'm looking for some route help. I'm tired of taking the typical route from Birmingham to Montgomery to Dothan, Dothan to I10, I10 to I75. So I'm looking to cut the corner through GA. Anyone have feedback on Highway 280/Highway 82 route, Columbus GA to Albany to Tifton to I75. Any thoughts on the lights/traffic along this route?

I did Highway 82 from Montgomery to Albany last year and it seemed ok, but I'm wondering if skipping I65 in AL and cutting the corner on 280 might work just as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

I'm biased against expressways but I think you'll enjoy the ride across Georgia.

If you like, you can access I-75 by going through Americus and Cordele on 280 and getting on I-75 south at Cordele.

If you have time there is lots to do on or near that road - Plains, Andersonville, Georgia Veterans State Park, Georgia Agrirama, plus plenty of stuff in Columbus, but your kids are probably a bit young for all that.

Have a good trip. Stay in our driveway if you like. We'll be in Virginia for T'giving.

Thanks Stick but we'll be moving fast, or as fast as 64mph setting on cruise control will let me! The point of this exercise is to get my wife and kids to her mother as easily and quickly as possible. Enjoying the ride or how many hours I have behind the wheel doesn't really qualify as a concern for my wife.

My company is headquartered in Columbus, so I've been a time or two. It is a nice town, but my goal will be well southeast of there before stopping for the night. Last year we made just south of Ocala, so that will probably be the target again.

Jeremy,

The route through Albany will provide good roads, but you may save time
going through Cordele, despite the slightly longer distance. There will be
less traffic and fewer lights that way.

I was going to offer full hookups here, but you'll only be a couple of
hundred miles on your way, so probably won't want to stop. You'll be
welcome if you do -- or unfortunately need to. :-)

Thanks Ken! That's exactly the info I was looking for. Avoiding the lights and the up and down from speed is a good chunk of the goal simply because it increases my fuel efficiency. I'm really only considering 280 because we're going in the coach. Too many speed traps in the car, but the coach keeps me from running that risk.

And yes, we'll only be stopping in your area if something goes wrong. So I'm hoping you won't hear from me! On the way back it's a different story, so if the offer stands for the Saturday night after Thanksgiving I might take you up on it. Although I'm not sure I can get the 7 hours it would take from the inlaws to you.

My mechanic and I are doing the now annual November inspection and maintenance this weekend, so I'm hoping any issues will be minimal. Last year we did well except for some broken studs and a realignment at Sirum on the curb middle wheel.

Jeremy,
We just came back to central Fl from the Columbus area and enjoyed our trip via Cuthbert, Camilia, Thomasville, ( Pure gas for #3.37 ) Monticello, Perry, Chiefland, and back on I 75 at Ocala.
All good roads and little traffic until Ocala :-(

Great Nelson. That's helpful as well. It seems like there are a plethora of good roads to get from Central AL to I75 in GA. Good to know because I'm really bored of Montgomery to Dothan to I10. Between the two Dothan conventions, our original move to AL, and last year's trip, I've done that too often.

~ Jeremy,
Last year when we spent a week on Cedar Key.
From Bham we used US 280 to US 27 ~
Coming back we went west at Perry on US 98
to Mobile and back north on US 43 to T town
and then home ~
A lil different but enjoyable ~
