"The company decided in 1970 to build a larger version of the Ultravan, and they called it the Tiara. 23' long and using a Oldsmobile Toronado 455 Engine and front wheel drive setup, they created a luxury RV that weighed in at a little over 6000 lbs"

HUMMM.. 3/4 style 8 lug straight wheels on the rear and on the spare size 33x12.5x? presumably 16.5 but offset dually type wheels on the front with 8 lugs which could have been changed since there seems room for the straight wheels. The first few GMCS were Toro 5 lug and I had thought the 8 lug hubs were GMC SPECIFIC made for the Toros just for the Motorhome?? But these are 1971??? So maybe the 8 lug hubs were 3/4 ton or 1 ton GMC 4x4 truck that were available???

That coach is seriously modified - the stock version didn't have wheel cutouts because the floor structure wouldn't allow it. So whoever did that could've done just about anything.

Note: the prototype shown on the early brochures also has wheel arches, but the production coaches did not.

What are y'all referring to with the SOB acronym? Is that the common "son of a b$&@" Or something different like "some other bus" or "some other brand" ? Trying to figure out if this is part of some GMC code or just "man talk" Smile

Very interesting and informative, thank you.. It sure fills in some of the blanks in my little mind that has been trying to figure out how GM came up with so many "good idears" on one unique vehicle.

The Tiara was first built in 1969, so the drivetrain was pure Toronado car - AFAICT if wasn't beefed up, widened, or modified at all. The initial units actually used the Toro car rear axle, though even at only 6000 lbs that proved to be inadequate.

FYI:
There were actually 4 OTHER motorhome manufacturers using the Toronado 455/fwd design that were built BEFORE the GMC MH, Cortez, Revcon, Tiara & Travoy.

Don't know how many they made, my guess is similar to Tiara numbers.

I have a period ad and a copy of a sales brochure should you need info from there.

Note: Belco was the company that restarted Tiara production after Ultra Inc shut down. They essentially sold out to Collins Industries in 1972.

Interesting coaches; as with our GMCs, a product ahead of their times.

I wonder if any are still around and how many were made.

Tiaras are related to and supported by the Ultra Van club. Principals of Ultra & Belco were invited to one of the UV rallies and they stated that there were a total of 42 Tiaras built from 1969-1972.

Only about 25 have ever been identified by the club though, and just 16 have turned up in the last decade.

I don't know much about Travoys. One of the UVers used to show up at rallys with one (before my time), and I have been told it was an extremely comfortable coach.

And that box is no more objectionable than the modern bus-boxes camouflaged with swoopy-doopy graphics.

I saw an RV wearing only primer - no swoops - and it looked dreadful. Even a gmc in a burlap bag looks better than that!

I had heard that Rectrans built at least one Discoverer using the drivetrain
as well. But I have never been able to find out any information on what
happened to it and why it did not make it into production.
