Just for info:

That normally means the message was NOT sent from the on-line forum, but from an old-school email list.

You must remember that in the end the cheapest coach you can find will usually end up costing you the most $. True along the way you may have "fun" but that experience will come with a price. A machine this old has surprised galore and one that you go into knowing there are major issues will only contiue to require an influx of labor and parts. That does not mean a good looking more expensive machine will not cause you to melt your charge card but at least the hope is some things have already blead out. Maintaining and updating these vintage machine is not an inexpensive endevour, things happen and just like that Coronet with a cracked block on a mold seam-- who could have expected that to happen.

You have some good points. Don't get me wrong though. If there was
nothing wrong with an engine I would not swap it out. I just yesterday went
and looked at a 75 23' with a dead engine for 1500.00. If there was not a
ton of stuff the guy did not tell me about over the phone I probably would
have bought it. That one would have gotten an engine swap.
That said I do not know why you cannot have both. I had a 56 Dodge
Coronet that I drove for about a year until out of nowhere the original
engine let go in a spectacular fashion. It seemed the block cracked on a
casting seem. That engine came out in favor of a 5.7 Hemi engine with the
computer and left all stock. I drove that car for another 3 years. Then it
got sold to my broth in laws neighbor in Texas. I drove it back and handed
him the keys.
Done right a little modernization will enhance an older vehicle. I rarely
see good jobs. But they can be done.

Jake, I wouldn't get too far into the modification concept until you've had
some time with a GMC. The 76 through 78 models had many improvements that
you are ruling out because of a smog concern. The whole engine swap idea is
potentially a can of worms that you really need to be cautious about. Many
403's run as strong as a 455 and by all accounts the original installations
of either OLDs powertrains is pretty bullet proof. You need to decide
whether you want a classic car that you can camp in or a reliable motorhome
that is dead reliable. Either approach is fine, but they are different
animals.

Jim,
You don't have to tell me. Even my last coach a 94 Holiday Rambler
Aluma-lite. It was a very expensive coach in its day on a Spartan chassis
with a diesel pusher and an Allison transmission. I hunted for 2 years for
one of these and bought an expensive example. I never got anywhere near
clearing off the "To Do" list. Everytime we went out something would get
added. So I am well aware of what I am getting into. At least as much as
my ignorance will allow me.
The wife and I have discussed exactly what we are looking for. As well as
what we can live with and without. With the shop I have mechanical problems
or gremlins can be easily and economically sorted out. Custom fabrication
is also something we can handle without too much effort.
I am just looking for a dream beginning. While doing that though I am
also keeping an eye out for a unit we could live with.

gmcnet.org, that is real bare bones, and only seems to be about an email
subscription, which is what I did. Is there an on-line forum, and if so, can
someone forward the link.
