I'm going to move my coach batteries from the rear generator compartment to the front. I have seen the Ragusa trays for both the driver's side and the passenger side. Any experience around which side is best-such as accessibility?

Bob,

I've had the 3-battery Ragusa tray under the passenger's feet for a long
time and find it perfect for the 23', except for 1 thing: Access for H2O
service. The 12 VDC battery set laterally across the back cannot easily be
accessed for checking/filling. The two longitudinally mounted 6 VDC
batteries can be serviced, but with some difficulty. All require a mirror
to check water level. I haven't yet, but intend to install the remote
"fill 'em all at once" kit. There's room around the batteries for several
quarts of spare fluids, funnel, etc.

As for the driver's side tray, I don't know, except that I can't see how
that would be a more easily accessed area. My engine fire extinguisher and
pneumatic brake pedal puller preclude its use anyway.

3 battery tray on passenger's side is great idea. Had one on my last coach. I have the tray for the driver's side, but have not installed it. More difficult than passenger side. Passenger side will give you more storage for goodies, as Ken expresses.

If your space is not taken already then I would get both. Can use the extra storage for other than batteries if you wish. I have both. Have 4 house batteries on them. Easy fill once you find the proper tools. Do not neglect checking the fluid levels. As for engine battery, I still need to figure out a way to keep fluid level checked more frequently.

Ken,

Avions came with two 12 volt batteries up front - one start and one house. Down back there were 12 volt batteries in a galvanized
box under the passenger side bed aft of the Onan compartment. I replaced the two 12 volt batteries in the galvanized box with two
six volt batteries.

I installed the Pro-Fill setup on the two six volts batteries:

http://tweetys.com/rvbatterywateringstystem.aspx?gclid=CJTzioajwroCFcnm7AodnzsABg

and the Quik-Fill setup on the two twelve volt batteries:

http://tweetys.com/batterywateringsystemdouble.aspx

Note that you have to buy the squeeze bulb too:

http://tweetys.com/squuzebulb.aspx

I have had a problem with the two twelve volt batteries. I noticed when I arrived this year a white substance under Double Trouble
below the battery tray. Evidently battery acid is being boiled out. I removed the junk stored on it and noted that the tray had a
lot of corrosion on it. I removed batteries and the tray and mixed up some baking soda and water and kept pouring it on the tray
until I had removed 99% of the corrosion. I then took the tray to a powder coater and had him powder coat it black. When I got it
back I sprayed it with three coats of undercoating. That sucker I hermitically sealed now!

I checked the level the Pro & Quik fill systems add and it seems a bit on the high side. I have a PD 9260 with the Charge Wizard and
pendant.

I'll service them this year before I leave and see what I find when I return next July.

Bob, Why Move 'em?

I have the pullout tray, and I gotta say, it is easy to service them with that.

You getting a different Genset that needs the room?

What's the consensus on moving the batteries inside the coach? Behind the step, under the booth seat for example.

I questioned the move also. The front wheels already have more weight on them than each rear wheel. so why move more up there? Also that is a long way to pull battery current to start the Onan.

Then I figured Bob knows what he is doing so he must have a good reason.

I'd highly recommend the Ragusa tray up front, but not for batteries. I had all three up front, and it's very hard to get the batteries in and out. However, it does make a great shelf to keep extra oil, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, etc.

The sliding rear battery tray that JimK carries works wonderfully and makes servicing the batteries a breeze.

Hi Chris--most of it is driven by a new gen set. I purchased a used but late model Onan a while ago and although I can squeeze it into a lateral position and utilize the drawer slides, I'm now thinking that I wnat to mount it fore-aft and double isolate it. I can do it with the batteries in place but it's getting a little tight and probably a "lot hot".

I'm not hard over on the idea and I'm definitely listening to all of the comments. Thanks guys! I'm just sort of tired bending over and banging my head on the generator hatch cover all the time. A slide may not be a bad idea.

I removed the big battery from the rear some time ago . I installed 2 golf batteries and moved the starting battery closest to the front tire. All on the passenger side. It doesn't appear t o cause an over weight problem my wife isn't near as heavy as me. I had to move the circuit breaker circuit up front also. As far as the Onan starting voltage it only made a fraction of a volt difference. It will help in starting the 455 in boost mode as all the batteries are next to one another. To remove the batteries the wheel liner needs to come off as they are too heavy to pull out the front access . This leaves the rear compartment for a big tool box and other stuff a big help for me.
