I read this story...
http://jalopnik.com/meet-the-guy-who-drove-across-the-u-s-in-a-record-28-h-1454092837

Is there a "category" for transcontinental times in vehicles other that
cars? I'm sure there is for airplanes, and probably was for trains. What
about RVs?

Has anyone done the New York to LA trip in an RV and measured the time?

I can't think of a more appropriate RV to do it in than a GMC, adequately
prepped. :)

Mount a third fuel tank, possibly a fourth, put in additional filling
ports, and you'd save tons of time.

I'm not suggesting driving hell-for-leather.... but it might be a fun trip.
if the record is either non-existent or not so fast that it would require
ridiculous speeding.

Good idea.

We can turn the back area into a giant fuel cell, and no need for bathroom breaks. Lol sounds neat.if we could just prepare some support vehicle's to refuel us along the way with en route fueling (like the Air Force has in flight)

Well, there's the coast-to-coast (NY, NY to Redondo Beach CA) time set in 1975 by Craig Ammerman & Co. in a Travco - 45:36:17 averaging 63 mph. Craig was running the "Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash", aka "Cannonball Run" (of movie fame) and now renamed, shortened, and tamed into a sponsored commercial venture called One Lap of America that's more of an east coast loop.

Here's a link fyi: http://www.onelapofamerica.com/Home.do

And here's an excerpt about them from a 1975 Car and Driver article about Cannonball finishers that year:

17/Bill Brodrick, Algonquin, Illinois; Pal Parker, Maggie Valley, North Carolina; William Jeanes and Craig Ammerman, New York; Time McGrail and Jerry Scarlato, Cincinnati, Ohio; 1975 Travco 270 motor home; 45 hours, 35 minutes; average speed, 63.6 mph: Wizard Bolus & Snopes tactician William Jeanes explained the debacle this way: "Our complicated strategy was built around beating the Bristol. This we succeeded in doing. But how did we know that the Bristol was going to finish in last place?" Led by grizzled Cannonball vets Brodrick and Parker (both on their third run) and aided by C/D Feature Editor Jeanes, trucking expert McGrail and Associated Press Assistant Sports editor Ammerman, and victulated by Cincinnati restaurateur Scarlato—who provided a Coast-to-Coast menu of Neapolitan delights—the Bolus & Snopes entry overcame a refrigerator that tended to spill its guts on sharp left-hand curves and finished a mere 54 minutes behind the motor home record they set in 1972.

With a third fuel tank, that's 150 gallons. You'd need a pickup truck with
a transfer tank and pump with a long hose. I read somewhere that a small
plane stayed aloft for over a month using a truck to pass fuel cans... they
even had a way to change the engine oil in flight.

This record must be broken.

I say the Barn Queen is the coach to do it, as it's heritage with Car and Driver, and William Jeanes (I think) makes it the logical heir.

No pressure, Robin...

Hey, I'm game. Really. Like the Land Speed Record, it could bring some more
awareness of the brand. :)

Of course if we did the Pinto Bean you could leave it at Black Rock rentals (?).

I wonder if you could entice William Jeanes to sit in on a leg of the trip, just for continuity's sake?

How about a trailer with a 500 gallon fuel tank. Plumb it into the coach fuel system. That would prevent any fuel stops. Bathroom would still be intact so no stopping for that. Take Jim Bounds along as your co-driver (he seems to like those marathon driving trips) and all purpose repairman. You could average a speed of 66 miles an hour and break the record. Equip the coach with a DVD player and you could watch "Cannonball Run" during the entire trip. I say go for it.

There was a car in the 50s or early 60s that was outfitted to go long distances without stopping. I believe it towed a fuel trailer and there were Silvertone or "Believe it or not" movies showing them changing a tire while moving. I don't remember enough to find it online.

500 gallons would weigh 3000 pounds and give a range of 5000 miles. That's
overkill. Only need range for 3000 miles. 300 gallons towable tank:
http://www.aaatrailersales.net/#!300-gal-fuel-tank-trailer/cbcy

But. How much time would be saved I wonder? It takes a while to fill up two
50 gallon tanks. Would towing a fuel trailer be worth it, time-wise, or
complexity-wise?

On the flip side, the less time spent refueling means less time going
ridiculously fast, and merely going reasonably fast. :)

To average 65MPH, you would have to drive 85MPH or more.

Oh, I thought they were 50 each. Not 50 total. Oops.

Additional tanks plus an additional refueling point. Use two pumps at the same time. Rubber external fuel tank down the center line.
100 gallons would be from 800-1000 mile range, only refuel twice. Oil loss might be a problem.

Map app indicates 40 hour trip. No breaks, fueling stops, etc.

We could add fluids from the interior hatch by redoing the boot. But how can we check/gauge the oil need while the engine is running?

Jim Bounds and I did LA to Orlando in 48 hours in a GMC. Never really pushed it too hard. ...just switched off drivers at fuel stops.
Not that hard with two stops for naps in rest areas in Texas and Mississippi to boot. Just wanted to make good time and it just happened.
