I always wonder why it wasn't restored to original specs.

The coach was at several GMCMI conventions, Goshen and Rapid City SD I think. I will see if I can find the pictures. GMCGL President used to be fleet manager for the GM collection before he retired a couple of years ago and he got the club in to see all the special cars at the museum and out to the fleet garage. A large number of the Heritage collection has been downsized when GM went thru the bankruptcy a few years back.

Dick Balsley ran the fleet for a while during the active display of the GMC. However, unlike the other vehicles in the collection, the GMC is not true to the original. It is a beautiful coach but many of us would have preferred a true restoration.
We had a handfull to choose from within the fleet that were more or less original.

GM or Dick Balsey brought one to the GMCMI rally at Berrien Springs. You are correct that it was not an exact restoration.

They brought in in on a trailer rather than drive it there. They also brought a couple of new HHR's.

This coach was originally the Trans Am Territory coach and may have never been original, as GM used it as a promotional vehicle per Bill Bryant:

We had several examples of original coaches still within the organization--that's why some questioned the choice of this one. I regularly used an original Palm Beach stationed at the DPG for a moving pit stop for many of our ride trips. We also had several transmodes that were used for telemetry but those were not really appropriate for any kind or restoration.
