I agree. If you need the storage, get a bumper hitch cargo shelf. Hoping that's what Santa is bringing me this year. I don't need to be climbing up to that box to get things out when there is a better way to do it now. Only reason I want to be on the roof in the future is to clean it off...

Since I tow, a hitch box won't work...although I could easily fabricate something to extend my hitch a bit.
However, for now, I'd like to put the pod back if for no other reasons than I have these 9 1/4" holes in the roof that I will have to close up. Not that big a problem either as this is a good use for panel adhesive.
Regardless, I would like to know how these things are SUPPOSED to be installed...

Kerry you can get an up and down double hitch. Box on the top, ball on the bottom. That's what I intend to do. Google "double hitch" and you'll get lots of results. With the box maxing out at 500lbs and flat towing fairly negligable, the tongue weight is manageable for this kind of setup. Wouldn't want to do it with the box and a trailer, but flat towing is different. Plus you can get a folding hitch adapter for the platform, so you can fold it up to hook up your vehicle.
As for how it should be done, mine is not much different than yours. rubber washers, goop, and some screws. Not sure if that was factory or not.

I don't know how it is SUPPOSED to be fastened, but mine has 8 rivnuts through the roof skin. The PO had tried to seal it with fender washers and silicone, inside the pod, but that didn't work. I removed the screws one side (four) at a time, tipped the pod up, and placed a vinyl hose washer around each of the rivnuts, then replaced the screws and repeated the procedure on the other four. That stopped the leaks. Rubber well nuts might work as well, and would be self sealing, but I don't think they will hold as well as rivnuts. I pulled one out of the roof of my Jeep Cherokee one time while tying a Christmas tree to the roof rack. It didn't take much.

put the hitch box on the towd ?
I have Frank Jenkins bumper box and an extended hitch, always tow with no problems. Box is way smaller than a pod. Sure easy to get to.

Kerry, when I put my pod on back in 1981 I used rubber well nuts - that take a 1/4 -20 bolt. I used stainless steel bolts.
I have never had a leakage problem and they are still holding well.

I used "elevator" washers from either Grainger or McMaster Carr.
Drilled two holes on either side for pop rivets and JB Welded/pop riveted in place.
Tried JB weld only and it pulled the Imron(r) off the skin.
Made wood spacers as need for the ribs.
Still holding and did not violate the "no rtv" pact with myself.
