Thinking of moving my gas fill location back towards the tanks. Thinking it may be easier to fill and not have gas smell in the cockpit.
Any thoughts ?
Do they make a door system I could recess into the body panel?

If you have a gas smell in the cockpit after fueling there is a problem with the vent system. If you run a separate vent line up to
as close to the vent line that connects to the fill line you won't have any problems filling.
Manny moved his fill fittings back near the tanks, however, he does not monitor the GMCnet and is FAR to busy building
transmissions, 1 ton front ends, and reaction arm brake systems to do so.

The reason you have a fuel smell in the coach is because a circuit in your fuel delivery system is leaking, my suggestion is to drop the tanks and replace your hoses under there. There are many of them.
As far as the fill goes, a properly operating system will pump in @ 35 gallons with descent speed. The system will burp back, wait a minute then pump in more at 1/2 pressure from the pump. If the system is operating properly you will be able to fill pretty well that way, if you cannot go fix it.
The problem is maybe 1/2 the length of the 1 1/4" hose running a distance but the main reason is the side fill into the tank. When you get over 1/4 in the tanks, the fuel in the tanks are pushing back on the fuel coming in. Having the fill not on the top but on the side causes this. You cannot change that so making the system work as good as it can I fell is the best thing. It's not a good idea to throw everything out and try to engineer it yourself, there were some reasonably savy guys that put the deisn together in the first place and with all it's limitations it really is a descent system.
I have seen tanks with a 2 1/2" fill on the top of the tanks but the body had to be lifter 4" for that to occure. The coach was a handicapped shuttle bus and the body was lifter to accommodate the wheel chair lift. That would be some pretty extreme modification to just try and fill the tanks faster. It's human nature when a issue is found to throw out everything and start from the beginning, remember other pretty smart people have already invented that wheel, do you feel 40 years later that there is some new technology that can make the system better?
Make the system all it can be and you might be surprised on how adequite the system actually is but you will have to fix it first and that means more than just replacing a bad part. Take it all apart and put it all back together properly-- it will work well for you.

GM would not have produced a product whose design allowed gas fumes to get into an occupied compartment under any circumstances - that is a huge safety issue never mind the customer satisfaction standpoint! If you are getting fumes at fill time then you have a problem in your fill or vent system.
As others have aptly pointed out there is a LOT of hose and tubing in the system and therefore LOTS of opportunity for leaks due to mechanical damage or alcohol-compromised lines.

FWIW, I can do a full fill at full nozzle flow, after replacing my fuel and vent lines with ethanol-friendly hoses. That might be partially because my beloved PO installed new body-to-frame rubber spacers (which apparently cause fueling issues when they compress and pinch the vent lines). I just wish the $xx.xx display didn't move with corresponding quickness...

Even modern vehicles can be "overfilled". Even though the GMC has a crude vapor separator in the system, constant clicking of the fuel nozzle can get fuel into the vapor canister. If you work really hard on trying to get the last drop of fuel into the vehicle you can create a fume issue.

I used ethanol-friendly hoses and yes it fills fast and easy. I haven't put a stop watch to it but I don't have the nozzle kicking off every five seconds. The room I lost inside is negligible. I wont get that extra bottle of dish soap under the cabinet.
The reason I moved the fill was to get rid of the over fill. I figured that at least a gallon or two would be sloshing around in there before enough miles of use drains it down below the tank entry. That kind of washing machine action would eat any kind of hose relatively quick and the fume pressure that's created could vent anywhere including back through the tanks causing a nasty burp of fuel forced out at any weak spot in the system.

Nobody else has mentioned that he also went to almost all (not the vapor vent and he may regret that) over the tanks and has radically changed the hydrology of the fill system? That later may not be for the worse, but I would like to hear from him how long a fill takes now.
