Really ?? Sad

I tried to log in at Golby last night and had forgotten my password so I did try a few of the password I use, after three faild attempts I was blocked and got the message in the header.
I sent them a mail but so far no replay.

But really is this the way to treat your customer ? I am on my way to spend some 1000 $ on parts for my GMC and now I am not really sure I will spend them at Golby....

I bought a couple of small parts from them recently. Seem like nice
folks. Even the Rottweiler Deacon was pretty friendly. They did
mention they were having trouble with their website.

I got a replay that they would fix it and that is good, but their web master should maybe find another solution and text if they have problems.

I just went to the Golby site and logged in without any problems. Random passwords that get you lockout is probably not a way to go. Your 7 hours ahead of us on time so you got them when they were closed if you tried last night. They have been open for about 2 hour now. You might try again and if you don't know your password follow the prompt. Good luck!

The problem was that I did enter the wrong password, then their web page will kick you out automaticly and block your IP address,oh well Golby will sort it out, I just do not like to be called a bad person.

I own and operate a metalshaping website. We get over 300 attempted spammer/hacker/directory attacker/etc registrations EVERY DAY. We use a software package called "STOP FORUM SPAM" that blocks registration of 99.8% of these scumbags (may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their privates)

We also have people who attempt brute force logins by trying multiple logins until they get one right. We just block them out for 30 minutes. The message you got seems extreme but realize that it probably applies to MOST of the folks who did what you did. I'd have phrased it differently.

G'day,

I just tried to log into the Golby website using a non existent user name and password to see what happens. Sure enough after three
tries it comes back with "You are a spammer, hacker or an otherwise bad person."

C'mon Espen with all due respect YOU forgot your password and YOU entered three incorrect passwords it's GOLBY'S fault when you get
locked out? Please explain how Golby is supposed to know you're a customer that has spent over $1000 with them and NOT "a spammer,
hacker or an otherwise bad person?"

Personally I thought that was kinda clever, if it was an Aussie website it would have come back with "Piss off you wanker!" ;-)

Maybe we are just very polite ( customer minded) here in Scandanavia

On my website it would read something like:

Dear customer you have entered the wrong password three times, for securety reasons we have blocked your account. Please contact us during opening hours to reopen your account

I am on my way to buy parts, I have not bought anything yet from Golby, but I was on my way to try their shopping cart for the first time since I did register in june or july.

It is of course not Golby's fault that I did forgett my user name and I did never say so, it was the message that did trouble me.

By the way try to use the same PC to get in to their page again, it is now blocked until you get your IP address unblocked Wink

Given the cr*p they have to put up with on a daily basis, you can't really blame theme.

Yes, their response in your case is inelegant but, it "fits" 99-percent of the time it's used.

Don't take it personally.

I don't think I'd remember my password if I hadn't used it in 90 days. Rolling Eyes

Personally I find the automated response humorous (probably how it was intended). The online universe is a tough place for those with thin skin. My skin is pretty much the same as a rhinoceros, so anyone wanting to get under it is going to have to use a machete, not rude words.

Given that the vast majority of time, the message that's sent out is accurate, you have to have some perspective on being called a duck after walking and quacking like one. Wink

Espen,

Of course we are :)

I figger'd that the message was the problem but note what Kerry Pinkerton has said. My GUESS is that there are more spammers,
hackers, and bad people than customers that make a mistake in their sign on.

Put yourself in Cliff's shoes and for discussions sake let's say somebody got in and screwed up his website big time, what kind of
message would you create?

Hi

It is not a matter of being thick skinned, it is a matter of how a business
treats customers who have forgotten their password.

I know I have forgotten my password on a number of sites and never received
an insulting response. You gotta love sites that require 15 character
passwords which must contain upper case, lower case, numbers, punctuation,
and don't allow you to reuse any password you have used in the past 2
decades.

I doubt the company is aware of the 'humorous' message. I would think a
wise business man would be far more interested in avoiding losing a customer
than giving would be hackers recognition.

I guess I just don't take myself seriously enough to get my knickers in a wad over a message like that. I'm the kind of guy who would laugh at a Don Rickles routine aimed at me instead of rushing the stage to punch him out.

Golbys message is wildly inappropriate.
There is never any reason for language like that in a professional setting.

It would be very easy to temper it with a few word changes.

Maybe we are just very polite ( customer minded) here in Scandanavia

On my website it would read something like:

Dear customer you have entered the wrong password three times, for securety reasons we have blocked your account. Please contact us during opening hours to reopen your account.

Appie,

My website used to say something like that until I repaired it the third time and made the IP lockout permanent. The message that came up with that was not pleasant and kind. But, I was a very regional business and the IP was never even North America.

I will admit the being customer minded is nice until you get beat over the head with it too many times.

I don't sell things on the web anymore.

What am I supposed to say to the hacker that violated my account and my address book?

Something like this?

"Dear Hacker
For security reasons I have changed my password to attempt to block you from my account. I know that at heart you are a very good person so if you want to do it again I understand. We are polite minded and forgiving people here in Colorado. "

NO WAY!
