Have an XM satellite radio. Lately, we haven't been able to hear it because of a spark plug noise...at least it is tied to RPM.
Any of you radio guys have any ideas on how to go after this?

Consider the noise suppression capacitor inside the alternator.

Is the XM playing through the stock radio? Do you have Mag-core ignition wires? You need to determine if the noise is coming in on the DC or through the RF side.

Any noise on your standard radio? Tune to a blank spot on the dial and listen for it. Really need to determine if the noise is riding in the 12v line or coming in on the antenna. Bad spark plug wires can create RF noise, spark system is a good broadband broadcaster. Noise that follows RPM points to ignition system as culprit.
Try changing the ground connection or cleaning the current spot. Dirty grounds can be crude rectifiers.
XM converter power connection could be suspect. Using the cigarette lighter as source?

You need to determine how the noise is getting into the radio.
What does it sound like? If it is popping, then suspect ignition noise. If it is more of a whine then suspect alternator or fan motor induced noise. I'm not familiar with XM but if you can disconnect the antenna at the radio, disconnect it and see if the noise goes away. I realize that you will also not hear any stations with the antenna disconnected but listen to any dead spot and turn up the volume.
You can also try temporarily disconnect the alternator or heater fan and see if the noise goes away.
If it uses a grounded body mounted antenna, suspect that the ground at the mounting as corroded or oxidized.
While we are on grounds suspect a ground loop. This why I tell people not to run two parallel ground paths. Most do not listen because they know better. How is the chassis of the radio grounded?
In the past on vehicles WITHOUT a wooden floor and fiberglass skins (like a GMC), I have had to do things like run braided ground straps to hoods, and doors, and exhaust pipes. This really does not apply in this case because so much of the GMC body is not metallic.
We really need more information on what it sounds like.

We'll be neighbors Johnny, I'm in A09. The XM is fed indirectly from the cigarette lighter from a multi-adapter setup (1 into 4 female lighter sockets). I have an aftermarket radio that had an input plug on the front panel and the XM plugs directly into that.
The noise is definitely tied to the engine rpm. It starts out as high frequency clicks and at speed is more of a constant whine. Impossible to listen to the radio.
Earlier this year I drove down to Ken Hendersons and had the same problem. Plugged and unplugged everything and it went away. Since then, I have a new Paterson distributor with his wires also.
That solution no longer works.

XM uses digital modulation therefore noise getting into the RF side of the radio (antenna, feedline, preamp) is most unlikely to make it through to the audio path in a recognizable form; if the noise is strong enough it will cause a complete muting of the output when the radio's decoder can no longer make sense of the incoming bit stream.
I'd suggest temporarily powering the XM radio from a 12V battery (lawn mower battery, 2 6V lantern batteries in series, or perhaps even a 9V battery will be enough) rather than the vehicle's DC system. If the noise goes away when on the temporary battery then you know the noise path is via conduction through the XM's power cord.

Right. Unlikely coming in on the digital side, but thought it might be on the receiving radio if FM. Is the cable between the 2 radios (most likely 1/8" TRS) shielded? There are thin speaker wire cables in that 1/8 format for computer type small speakers which would be unshielded.

per our conversation, have a look tonight and eliminate the ignition system - which being all new is not a prime candidate. 'Whine' points to alternator, cruise control transducer (!) and pretty much anything electric spinning wiyth the engine. I couldn't bring my swept analyzer, it's being used. But we can look and tinker till we find the culprit. Grounds and bypass components around the alternator are prime suspects.

It's a common problem with sat radio that uses the aux jack for the receiver module and powered by the cig lighter. It is a DC power problem. A simple filter can be had from several sources, one is www.tssradio.com. Go to their site and search for the PIE 5 amp noise filter. Should do the trick. It's $9.95.

rf_burns wrote on Fri, 18 October 2013 07:08 | My vote is with the ground loop too. Radio is grounded in one place and cig. lighter is grounded at another.
Try running the XM off a stand-alone battery and see if the noise goes away. If it does then try running the XM off the power wires going into the radio.

I also wonder if there is a bad diode in the alt. Radio whine through the power has to be pretty severe to show up as noise in the audio.
