I need to flush the radiator before it gets cold. Has 10 year +- coolant.

Guess its still sort of working since the block has not cracked, but then again it has not been that cold in NC the last few years.

Anyone have an easy way to go about this?

How much coolant should it take?

It's still working for freeze protection but the anti corrosion inhibitors are long used up and the antifoam and rubber swell additives ard also long gone v

I was in the antifreeze business with Dow years ago and I change mine every two years.

Modern glycol doesn't loose much freeze protection over time but the additive package is used up at 2 years leading to PH change and corrosion. I'd open the petcock, remove the cap and drain it in a litter box. Remove and clean the overflow tank. Close the petcock, fill with 50/50 ethylene glycol and distilled water or buy the pre mixed 50/50. If the radiator is 10 years neglected, might be better to remove and take to a radiator shop eventually than to try and home flush, which I don't support as being of much use. Be sure overflow is full and run with heat on till warm, shut off, let cool repeat until all air is out and reservoir at mark. This will work provided your 9# cap is good. The cap should be replaced every 5 years or so as the rubber seal and valve has a service life

Should I drain it, add water run the engine and get the coolant out of the block and drain again before adding new coolant?

Just thinking since it has sat for so long.

The best way that I have found to flush it is to install a Flush N Fill kit.

You put a tee with a cap in a heater hose on the top of the engine. Remove the radiator cap and put the water deflector onto the radiator. Turn the heater valve to hot. Then connect a garden hose to the tee and it will flush the motor block and the radiator and heater core.

When it runs clean just turn off the hose and leave the cap off the tee. Open the petcock at the bottom if the radiator and deain off a couple of gallons of water. Then pour two gallons of concentrated antifreeze into the radiator. It will push water out of the tee. When you have the two gallons in replace the cap on the tee and fill the radiator with water.

I have been using this for years on all of my vehicles. It makes it very easy.

Be sure to drain the radiator and bring recovered coolant to proper recycling center, ethylene glycol is extremely dangerous to the environment. The flush n fill kits prevents ability to properly recover the contaminants.
