That would be cool to see a pristine preserved coach. Even better if you could buy it. Too much money any way. Maybe we could borrow it?

That is a Cinnabar restoration. It was at one of the ITL rallies some
years back. Dick B(?) supervised the work with a blank check from GM.

Eight years ago, the Great Lakers had a rally which included a tour of the GM Heritage museum. I took a few pics of the coach.

Nicely done, but not original on many levels. However, I would not mind having it in my garage.

Hang on, here comes more history :^)

It has been shown at several GMC rallies and is a top notch restoration by Cinnabar thanks to Dick B.

It had been left in the weeds at the GM proving Grounds and had an interesting history, it had originally been the Pontiac Grand Am Territory (GMC). I think it would have been really nice if it had been restored as the original TA Territory, but in any case it is a very nice GMC MH that ended up as an outstanding coach.

Here is a link that shows the original and restored coach.

Very nice restoration.  Does the spoiler have a practical purpose or is it just cosmetic?

Here is more of the story:

If you look at the original Trans am Territory GMC, notice that it had a front spoiler, rear spoiler & fender flares. They removed all but the rear spoiler, the reason for leaving it on per Dick B. was that it was so well glued to the body that they probably would have damaged the body in removing it.

As to its value, probably more show than go, I believe it was part of the disguise, making it more "Pontiac" & less GMC.
Just my opinion.

That makes sense. Seems like a lot of Pontiacs had side skirts too.
Wish I could get some of that glue.

You may enjoy seeing a coach like that but you really would not enjoy owning it!  There are no parts that old trustworthy.  Every rubber part, belt, clamp seal, gasket, even plastic will be near it's 1/2 life.  I have 2 time tunnel machines come through our shop recently, both now have more invested in the updates than eather person paid for the coach!  It's more than miles that kills machines, age is a big deal.  It is cool looking at so many descent looking original parts but man, start thinking of truting a 12,000 pound rig on original bla, bla, bla and it gets scary.  One just left with 20 year old tires that looked great with no cracks!

I tell ya guys, with the age of our coaches, time has caught up with us.  They may be as sleek or moreso than anything else out there but the age is really hurting things.  Buying a low mile coach, original and all is an E ticket ride to spend more cash,

Reviving an old thread here. I ran across an article from 1980 describing the GMC "Trans Am Traveler" that ultimately morphed into the GMC at the GM Heritage Center. For those of you unaware of this particular vehicle's history, I'll give a brief description. It was owned by Pontiac Motor Div. The coach was the centerpeice of the "Trans Am Territory" a parking area for Trans Ams at various racetrack infields in the 70s and early 80s. Pontiac modified the paint and trim to more closely identify with the subject vehicles of the day. Of particular interest is the modifed instrumant cluster. They incorporated 70s era Firebird intruments into the GMC IP. Also a Firebird three-spoke "Formula" steering wheel replaced the original part. Special spoilers, wheel flares, and wheel covers were also added.

I have uploaded page 1 of the article here. Page 2 is located in the same directory.

I had the good fortune of spending a day at the heritage center last December and got to really explore that coach. It was beautifully restored and is fully functional. GM has a rigorous maintenance plan for those vehicles and all of them are started and/or driven every month.

The restoration is obviously not to original finish specification, which is disappointing to me. It does, however, feel like a new coach must have felt. It is a 26-3 floor plan, with a second dinette table in the back and much of the casework is original GM casework. The cabinets are louvered like the standard ones in a Palm Beach. I'm guessing that they don't have a stockpile of green plaid, so they chose not to be as original with it. Maroon fabric with walnut and black plastic laminate.

It has the later dash design, but has additional instruments and a DIN receiver/CD player. The front seats are typical RV seats rather than the original space age buckets. It has Venetian blinds rather than curtains, too.

The chrome headlight bezels are an interesting touch, and the grille has chrome rather than silver paint accents. They put a newer gmc logo in the grille rather than mounting the chrome letters above it. They also installed painted fillers between the chrome bumpers and the body.

It would be fun to take it for a spin to see how it handles.

I was surprised at that myself since we had several others to choose from the were still original
