Starring the Muellers and the Phippses. :)

I'm an "essential" Federal employee, which means I'm working, but not
getting paid until all this blows over. All overtime is cancelled, however,
so it means I'm not working tomorrow. The weather is absolutely gorgeous.
I've got a mobile mechanic who is hopefully going to work with me tomorrow
and get the rear wheels all put back together. :)

Hopefully, those are "flare" fittings, not "compression" fittings on the hard lines.

Do I look like I know the difference? :) doing some research... I think
they may be "flare" fittings based on shape. Wikipedia says flare is a type
of compression fitting.

Meeting mechanic in the morning. Excited!

Darryl,

The hard brake lines in GMC's (and other vehicles) are 45 degree inverted double flare.

My spider-sense is warning me that somebody is Up To Something. :)

In other news, I'm heading out to the Palm Beach to meet the mechanic. I've
got two copies of the Chapter 5 "Brakes" from the manual printed to take
with me. Just a reminder... the larger circumference brake shoe goes on the
rearmost part of the brake assembly. That'll be on the 9 oclock position on
the passener side and the 3 ocolock position on the driver's side. Have I
got that right? And the adjuster wheel needs to be close to that larger
circumference brake shoe. Page 5-4 of the manual shows an example. The
larger circumference brake shoe is listed as the "secondary" shoe. This
must be either the passenger rear or passenger middle brake assembly.

Yes also note that the adjuster that goes between the shoes are right and left. They adjust by being pushed down by the lever to make longer.

Make sure you lubricate the adjuster with a bit of Synpower. Put it in the small end and wipe any excess off when you assemble it.

also put a small film on the contact area where the shoes touch the backing plate.
After you get it all done and back together and adjusted..
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6385-how-i-adjust-brakes.html
You need to set the parking brake before you put the wheels on. See if they all work and see if they will release completely. Good chance the cables and springs are old and dirty. If the brake do drag after releasing you will need to remove that drum and tap the arm back and service the springs and cables or not use the parking brake.

For Rob M and the other home viewers...

http://youtu.be/N8hGW64CrOE

Mechanic originally was supposed to be there Saturday morning. Then
Saturday afternoon. Then Monday morning. THen Monday afternoon. Now it's
going to be tomorrow.

My patience weareth thin. But I need the help, and sometimes life happens.
If this guy is competent (he doesn't even have to be an Ace!) then I can
really use him.

What is the little cable? It's clearly not the parking brake cable.

Robin,

I sent you an OFF NET message regarding the cable which should help you indentify which one it is so you can get a replacement. It
needs to be attached before that brake drum can go on.

You sound really disappointed which is understandable, I reckon you're dealing with a guy that is very busy and that's why he keeps
rescheduling.

Even if he puts he drums back on I suggest you take them back off and inspect what he did.

Also I note you only had one tube of Valvoline Synpower you might want to drop off a second one as it might be necessary and you
don't want this mechanic using something else!

Regards,
Rob M.

For Rob M and the other home viewers...

Robin

Robin,

Please don't work under that coach until you get better support under it.
That rickety conglomeration of sticks you've got piled up there is
DANGEROUS. Eiither get some 6T+ jack stands -- and plywood squares to put
them on since you're on dirt/gravel. Or get some decent shoring -- yours
is much too narrow. 2x12's, 4x6's, or similar.

Please -- we don't want to lose you to being squushed into the Mississippi
Mud.

As was said before you NEED better blocking under you coach.
It's only a matter of time before the 2X4's explode
I once put a 4X6 under the bogey made some fine kindling licked split.
Now I use some heavy duty Jack stands with built in Jacks plus a board under the jack stand.
I only wish we where closer.
The cable you where messing with is your E brake or parking brake cable.
I would hate to use it as an emergence brake if it's like most of the GMC's
It works somewhat as a parking brake.
