As I restore my 77 transmode into something that looks like a real coach I
keep waisting time investigating things I read on our Tribal Blog.

I Called Tech support at Hayden Auto parts and was informed that offer 3
levels of fans. The results of those discussions were as follows:

*Standard duty* - not recommended for our coaches.

*Heavy duty* - Recommended for our coaches in the form of part #2747.

*Severe Duty* -Are only recommended for applications with fans that have a
"pitch" of 2 1/2" or greater. (my Fan and others that I have measured have
a 2" pitch) What Performance issues are created when we use Hayden pt#
2797 (Severe duty)?

A GMC 2" pitch fan *cannot *"decouple" from a Severe duty Clutch.

A GMC 2" pitch fan will always be engaged and rob Horse Power / decrease
gas mileage when used with a severe duty fan Clutch

A GMC 2" pitch fan will create excessive noise, when used with a severe
duty fan clutch.

A GMC 2" pitch fan will probably NOT Lengthen the bearing life in the
Water pump when used with a Severe duty Fan clutch.

I Can't vouch for the Delco brand of fan clutches. Don't know if they have
the same performance criteria or curves of performance.

As a side Bar issue, I've also contacted a couple of aftermarket folks to
investigate Electric fan alternatives. I've also asked them to look at
lighter weight fans that "flatten out" at higher RPMs including "Tuned"
Viscous clutches for those fans.
I'll report out as information becomes available.

Tom, let me know what you find out about the electrics. So far, no one has figured out how to make one work properly without drawing too much power. I'd love to have an electric one on the coach. I do plan to install one on my 65 Mustang.

Tom,

I'm using a 2747 that's been 'slightly modified' to engage at a higher temp. It's not a Hayden, it's whatever Chinese brand Autozone sells.

Years ago I tried a 2797 and found that the difference between the engaged and disengaged speeds were far too great and the noise it made when fully engaged was far too loud. The sound reminded me of an International school bus from 1971. I think I picked up 15 horsepower just by removing the 2797! The 2797 lasted a couple of days and was exchanged for the 2747, there was no way I was going to drive a vehicle roaring like that.

The 2747 has the proper spread between engaged and disengaged speeds but at factory settings it engages too early for me. It's a long story, but I 'adjusted' the thermo spring so it comes on at a higher temp. A little bending of the spring goes a long way in making the fan clutch behave like I want it to.

I got about 6 years out of the first Chinese 2747 and replaced it this past summer because the bearing was starting to get a rumble to it. The new replacement had to have it's thermo spring 'adjusted' too.

Your experience mirrors exactly what I went through with multiple Haydens several years ago. After trying 4 severe and heavy duty clutches, Hayden tried to get me to modify mine to come on later at a higher temperature. I refused and returned all of them. I went to a Delco Heavy Duty one at Denny Allen's and Delco Engineeering's suggestion and never had a clutch issue again.

Ken - the delco fan clutch part number you used would be handy.

Has anyone used the ACDELCOOUTLET website? They list a 15-4208 for $69, but the site seems a little ... I'm not sure what. Maybe it's the russky.

And can I tell what fan clutch is installed on my engine without pulling it?

I used the 15-4208

I went to the acdelcooutlet site you referred to and Firefox tells me the site is "untrusted". Based on that I would stay away from it.

It has been a few years sine I ordered one but I got them from ACdelcodirect.com

I believe it is now superseded by 15-4216

Here is a list of vehicles it was used on:

OK,

I found an invoice for one I ordered ad sent to Canada in 2006 for $49.75 plus $6.16 shipping. The part number is 15-4208. I'm sure the price is higher now.

I have found 2 superceeded numbers for the 15-4208. They are 15-4947 and 15-4216

The site was http://www.AC-direct.com. It is no longer a valid site.

I also ordered one for someone a few years back off of ebay.

I wish Jim K. would stock these to make it easy for everyone but he only has the severe duty one (15-4944).

Note: A trace on that acdelcooutlet.com site says the server is located in Germany. I think I would stay away from it.

I think that you have your numbers screwed up.
Kanomata carries the 15-4644 clutch, not the 15-4944 clutch.
The new number is 15-40108.

AC/Delco lists this for the 350 cu inch diesel engine.

For the Heavy Duty fan clutch, which engages to approx 70% of the engine RPM, does anyone know or has calculated the CFM the standard GMC fan blade generates.... say at 2500 RPM ???
