Emery,
My GMC does not have a clip. Surprisingly, the 1973 and 1974 coaches did not have them. Mine started life in '73.
The nut on mine loosened on the shaft over time but the splines held the wheel tightly in place. There was not any looseness in the steering wheel. I didn't know the nut was loose until I decided to change wheels.
