There is an interesting article about the Magnum hybrid inverter / charger in this month’s issue of the FMCA magazine. I thought this was discussed a short while ago when talking about using smaller generators that are capable of running air conditioners, but not enough juice to start an air conditioner. The hybrid will draw power from the battery bank to get over the hump, as I understand it.
I saw no mention of cost in the article, however it sounds expensive. In order for it to do it’s best work you would need to replace the breaker panel with one that can be managed by this device. It will “shed” load if needed, meaning that it turns off the breaker. You program it with information, what is the type and capacity of your battery bank, how big is your shore power circuit, and it handles the rest. When there is excess shore power available it charges the battery bank, when the load risks tripping the shore power breaker it augments the supply with the battery sourced inverter.
It seems rather complex to me, but I’m intrigued by the sophistication of it. Since I have only 2 golf cart batteries its overkill for me.

It is expensive, at least for my taste. Google and you will find "List price $2,779.00". That is more than I am interested in spending.

But that's just the beginning - you'll need a new breaker box and breakers, the remote kit to start the Onan, controllers, etc. I'm guessing you'd be in the $7,500 to $10,000 neighborhood before you're done.

Trace and later Xantrex had an inverter that did load sharing years ago. It was available in 12 volt 2500 watt or 24 volt 4000 watt versions for RV use. I have one in my converted bus that I installed in 1998. It is a handy feature and I have used it a few times but it's nothing new. The same folks that designed it at Trace are at Magnum now. Xantrex decided it was too expensive to produce and quit building them a number of years ago. I actually have two extra units in the shop I saved for'just in case'.
