Guys,
Be aware that the top temp limit on this unit is a little over 530 DegF. The Harbor Freight unit on sale for about $18 more has a range of almost 970 DegF which is almost double the range. I guess it depends if you want to check header temps or not.

Even though I have the Harbor Freight unit, I ALWAYS seem to break something, thus I bought one of these as a spare. I just didn't feel like driving up to HF today.

Thanks. My little tiny unit quit shutting off and the battery suffers for it. Maybe I will not loose this one.

Do they read accurately if pointed at reflective, polished, or semi-gloss surfaces like an exhaust header? My personal experience with IR imagery is that you need to be looking at a blackbody in order to get the most accurate readings. This became obvious to me when I once used an IR imager to look at the stainless backsplash of a drinking fountain - instead of seeing a dull piece of metal at ambient temperatures I instead saw a reflection of my face and body that with an indicated temperature of 98F.

One time years ago I used an IR thermometer to spot-check temperatures of copper piping; I found that if I wrapped a piece of black electrical tape around the pipe and then pointed at the tape that I would get very accurate readings. If I pointed at bare copper then the readings would be nonsense.
