They are both physically the same dimension, so physically they can be
interchanged, but for optimal performance, the advance curves SHOULD BE
optimized for each engine. Their torque curves are different. Dick Paterson
has published MUCH INFORMATION on this.

And Dick Patterson told me at Branson that the advance curves also are different for different final drive ratios.

I'm reasonably certain that my final drive is a stock 3.07. I hope to go to a 3.70/3.73 ratio eventually. Dick said that a distributor set for the 3.07 would suffer when coupled with a 3.70 but that one set up for the 3.70 would only suffer slightly if used with a 3.07.

With that info, I bought one there that he already had set up for my hoped for eventual 3.70 drive.

When Dick did one for me, in addition to final drive ratio, he asked how much my toad weighed.

And also whether you pulled a toad and what it weighed and also how fast you drive.
Dick takes a lot into consideration when setting up the distributor for your GMC.

Mike,

Yes and no.

The dizzy's will fit either engine, HOWEVER, if you have a points dizzy in your 455 and you install an HEI dizzy the 455 the air
cleaner will not fit without modification.

The dizzy cap is larger on the HEI than the Points dizzy and it will hit the bottom of the air cleaner.

Regards,
Rob M.
