Came down the long grade and wondering about going back up. I can probably keep it at 50 in S but wondering since some are very long pulls. I don't see another reasonable way to Santa Fe. I have a stock 3.07 and good OE trans and a solid 455. No temp gauge other than OEM with new type sender. I did install the under radiator spoiler from Jim K.

Dan's route is a good one, but somewhat out of the way.
I drive I-17 from Phx to Flagstaff regularly with little problem. There is a rest area at Sunset Point where I usually stop for a short cool down, another mountain to cross before you get to the Verde Valley, then a lot of uphill going up onto the rim from there. I have a heavy 26 footer with a stock 455 and a 3.70 final drive, Towing a Tracker, I will be down to 40 mph in second gear for extended periods of time, but with an aluminum radiator and an additional trans cooler, it doesn't seem to do any harm.
If you're not in a hurry, go 60 to Lordsburg as Dan suggested, then take the hatch cutoff from Deming to I-25. It is a lot flatter and more gradual that way. Once you get out of AZ though, the scenery is kind of dull.

Carl, he could stop at Elephant Butt and enjoy the scenery of southern NM.

That's true. Elephants Butte is a pretty area, but most of the drive by scenery from Hatch to Albq is pretty much non existent.
I think the drive from Albuquerque toward the West is pretty flat with a gradual uphill. Albq to the East is a different story.

My Streets & Trips says Dan's route through Globe to Deming is only 20 miles more than through Flagstaff. A very nice drive on great two lane highway. I have driven it many times, but never in my Gcoach. Can't really address climbs, never enough to bother the cruise control in my vans.
The shortest route is to Payson, then Holbrook. But that way does have a killer of a climb just South of Payson. And a pretty significant one just North of Payson.
