I am looking for ideas on flooring options for our units. the last 2 years we have replaced the carpeting with continuous vinyl it worked fine but once the playa dust from the desert works its way in it is starting to break down the vinyl. we have also tried hardwood flooring but the dust gets in the joints and thats not working well either. i am looking at ceramic tile now as a possible option. has anyone had success with tile? worried about cracking more then the additional weight.

I went with cork tiles, flaoting not glue down. tiles were 1 by 2 feet. after they were down I put a layer of poly on them per manufacture recommendations. I love the way it feels under foot. I sweep up dirt. damp rag if I spill something. I did not do steps or cockpit, but hope to in year or so.
I have seen tile done, cold and hard. but pretty

Check with Jim B at the Coop as i remember he had a coach done with product that was poured and troweled and left to cure.

Many or even most of the thinset 'mortars' are vinyl-based now. As is floor-leveling compound.

I tiled the risers on the stairs in my house and used regular grout. The steps were wooden and every time I stepped on them they flexed which caused the grout to crack and chip out. I replaced all the grout with a latex based grout and haven't had a problem since. It is very flexible and forgiving. Visually you can't tell the difference from concrete based grout. I would recommend this type of grout if you choose ceramic tile.

Actually, what the PO that did the install told me (before I sold it to you) is that the tiles were glued down with construction adhesive and the 'grout' is sanded silicone (available in many colors and looks like real grout). Regular grout will crack out.

See if Sargent's Paint still makes a product called Marmoplast. It's a brush-on thick two part coating, one water based and one oil based, which when stirred makes a mottled pattern. Yo9u coat it with clear - polyurethane for floors. It should work fairly well in that service.
