Ok, Here is a topic that I can post about that shouldn't cause hate and discontent amongst the members.

I have been enjoying restoring Bialaddin, and Vapalux English pressure lanterns with my 5 year old son that we use while camping. I use the 300X, and a few M320s. The M320 are MoD English surplus.

Its amazing how one pressure lantern can illuminate so brightly! I have only seen one or two Coleman lanterns I liked. I tend to like Kerosene lanterns since I have to only worry about one fuel source as all my lanterns are kerosene.

I enjoy the English lanterns since they are inexpensive, simply made, have few breakable parts, burn bright, last forever, and run kerosene. I like some of the old petromax lanterns but I only want one brand (Vapalux/Bialaddin are the same brand) so I only have to carry one type of mantle, and a few spare parts and I'm good forever.

Learning to light a pressure lantern is a bit tricky at first, each lantern has its own personality. But once you get the hang of it they light easy.

I also have a liking for Feuerhand german storm lanterns. Non pressure, but the larger ones burn great and the light is warm and rich color. Plus they are high quality, and inexpensive.

Anyone else use any of these types?

They certianly are cool.
I am a colemen fan myself, mostly cause they remind me of camping with my family.

I do think Kerosene is a better more widely availabe fuel and probably a better choice when the world ends.

But I figure if that happens I'm dog food anyway.

I just bought a nice 1961 red coleman for $30.

do you have any pictures?

I'll have to transfer a few pics from my phone to the computer. If you have a coleman its prob a 200A. I think I maybe wrong I'm not a Coleman collector at all, but the 200A was a red one with nice looking globe. But I thought the 200A ran on Coleman fuel. I have seen them converted for kerosene.
I like kerosene cause a pressure lamp lasts 11 hrs, producing 350 lumen of light, and a storm lantern produces far less light but 22+ hrs for most is great. I just bought a English Ministry of Defense 1950s storm lantern as well, but its on the way from England still. Olive drab of course!
I thought there would be more interested, but I think most GMC owners tend to not dry camp which is all I do. Having tons of light to illuminate the night is something I enjoy. Plus it makes a cool father/son bonding time while we recondition the old lanterns.

Yeah, its a 200A, runs on white Gas.
Puts out a whole lotta light and has one setting.
I have a more modern one that can be dimmed, but it doesn't have the charm of the old red one.

Best part is the hiss of the lamp whe it runs

the wife and I love the motorhome but still bring along the Coleman gas stove and lantern, we like to camp Smile

we don't bring a tv and we sit outside unless it's too buggy or cold. We cook and do dishes on the picnic table. ( ok mostly her )

I do want a kerosene lamp, I was thinking about just a hurricane style one with a wick. simple and easy.

Yeaaaaa, another GMCer that camps in the GMC! Thats all we do. Family of 4, 3 dogs, in a 23ft its a adventure.

We do dishes in the GMC. But I bypassed (by valve I can open/close it) the gray water tank so we don't fill the tank quickly. I hooked up a EZ 101 water heater for instant hot water. So no dishes cleaned outside, but I'm not as fortunate its a 50/50 shot who does dishes! lol My daughter is getting big enough now so maybe it will soon be 33/33/33% lol Smile

Before the forum I assumed most owners would be camping in their GMCs. But it seems that most drive them from place to place (kinda the way they were intended). I'm not all that popular amongst the GMC crowd cause honestly I do not like driving the coach. I don't absolutely hate it, but anything bigger then a car I don't tend to like to drive. The GMC isn't fun FOR ME at all to drive. So camping is great, driving I'll pass. Having figured out massive issues with drivability made a huge difference in the way it drives, and I can see why some enjoy it more so then other RVs. If I did it over again, I would of bought a modern 19-23fter.

Anyway back to lanterns... I'd suggest a feuerhand kerosene lantern. There is literally no other equal quality storm lantern being made. Still made in germany, only about $25 If new isn't your thing then shop the bay for feuerhand lanterns. Dietz is a famous lantern but I'd buy one pre-1950s. If you ever have any questions I'm no expert by any means but I'm glad to help!

I ike my double mantel green coleman. Dry camping a week at a time works for me but it is a plus to at least have an outhouse.

Oh we do like sleeping inside! but rarely use the onboard bath, use the campground facilities instead.

Having AC is sure nice when it's hot and sticky, and a solid roof when it's raining.

no tv, we read and talk, go exploring and drink some wine.
I will admit to a laptop, I gotta read the GMC list somehow!

There was an Aladdin open mantel kerosene lamps made for many years. Qui Vive had very limited electric power and using it for lights was just not going to happen when were at anchor. So, I read by one of these until we moved to the house.

I keep looking for them at flea markets, but I don't see them. I might buy one at the right price even if it does stink if kerosene. The odorless kerosene that you so enjoy is a relatively new commodity.

Our old Stardust had a propane open mantle gas lamp. Worked great. The hiss was very comforting. As to gasoline ones, I wonder how 10% alcohol affects them - if at all.

I've noticed not all lamp oil is created equal. I bought 6 gals of lamp oil sold in Brooklyn NY I think that has zero Oder. I mean literally nothing even when smelling it from the bottle. It's advertised by a Jewish supply company and is great. It won't vaporize well for pressure lamps, but for kerosene lamps works great with literally zero Oder.

Where my rv is at its rarely over 85 degrees. Parked at 6100 ft a few mid days get wam but my swamp cooler works great to keep the temp down. And the solar panels laugh at the little load. I enjoy sleeping with a roof and a door. We don't do any camp ground camping, rv parks and such. So nice hot shower and a indoor bathroom makes camping great! Cool breezes and no rain!
