I noticed water dripping from under my propane tank so I pulled up my mattress and looked at the water pump. Sure enough the leak was on the output side of the pump. The leak was a cracked output barb on the pump so I replaced it. When I turned the water back on everything looked fine so I cleaned up. When I went to put the cover back over the water tank, it would not lay flat. I realized that the water tank was full and looked about to burst. Outside, water was squirting out the water fill cap above the propane tank. The new water pump was allowing water to pass through it when it was not running and the water tank filled. This seems like a very simple system so I believe the pump is defective. I've removed the pump and sealed off the inlet line to the water pump until I can replace the pump or determine what the problem is. I'm a full timer so I have city water. With the pump removed I can blow on the inlet side and at first thought it was fine but I hooked up a hose to the inlet side and water gushes out the outlet side.
During all of this, enough water leaked all over the place and soaked the carpet between the bath and the closet. I soaked up all I could with towels and got out a space heater to dry up the remainder. After a day I've noticed that the carpet in that area is saturated again. Outside I see no water dripping. I looked again at the water pump area and no leaks. I don't believe the water tank was damaged but cannot figure out where the water is coming from. The carpet is now soaked up to the kitchen area.
You guys always save my bacon although I'm still struggling with by furnace issue, but this is far more urgent. We GMC owners are so fortunate to have this forum. Thanks for all the help, past and future. I try to help to help others when I can but this issue plumb evades me.
So, my questions are: Is my new pump defective and more importantly, where is all the water coming from?

You obviously leave the GMC hooked up to city water. I have see a few motorhomes that have had pipes break or other situtations such as yours where it backs up through the pump. When people have left their motor homes and returned and open the door only to have a waterfall flow out.
Years back after seen this happen at a rally where we had to help them pull out all the carpet, etc. I made a decision to never hook up to water. I fill my tank and use the pump and when the tank gets empt;y I refill it and dump the holding tank.
In your case, the water is probably flowing out of the vent on the top of the water tank. The factory hooked a tube to it and taped it up inside the wall behind the toilet. It is likely spewing out the top of the tube and running down and soaking the floor.
I ran a vent from the top of the tank around the back to the inside of the water fill and connected it with a small brass nipple so that when I fill the overflow water will come out the small vent opening.

Thanks Emery.
I wonder if you ever sleep. You usually contribute to my posts morning, noon or night! Thanks for your help.
Do you think my pump is defective? I can't believe it should allow water to pass through without power to it.

Mine feeds the city water connection to the outlet side of ther pump, the pump has a one way valve built into it but you could add one at its output. The city watrer inlet has a one way valve also, so the pump doesn't throw water out when no hose is connected. The tank feeds the pump inlet. So either your pump or an outboard one-way valve is leaking. One way around this is simply use the water connection to fill the coach tank, and refill it as necessary rasther than leaving the hose connected to the city water inlet.

Johnny, I think you are absolutely right once I think about it. I just hooked it up backwards. The old pump was entirely different and unmarked which was in and which was out. I can see now that the inlet to the pump should come from the tank, not the city water.

OOOPS :)
There is a lot of sense in Emory's way of getting water. I also do my sewer connect the same way. When the water tank runs low I go pull the handle and fluish the blackwater in a rush, refill the water tank, anfd go about my binniss. My coach (Norris upfit) doesn't always drain the blackwater when it trickles, but a SHAZOOM of 25 - 30 gallons flushes it fairly well. It has no level guages so I watch the freshwater tank. When it gets low, blackwater is getting full.

Thanks fellas. I presume I hooked my pump up backwards. My plan is to put it back in the system correctly and see if that cures the problem. Once it's working I'll most likely do as you guys have suggested and use the on board water tank. I still have a lot of water to clean up but have a friend with a wet/dry vac. If the carpet starts to stink I'll replace it because I don't like it anyway.

Get one of the in-line regulators and put it on the water hydrant at the RV park. I'm reasonably sure even Wally has them.

I am with you Emery. Hook it up once a year, or two, just to check for leaks. I love the on board system.

However, you still have about 45psi in the motorhome and if a pipe or fitting inside the GMC leaks you can do a lot of damage.

My practice has been to turn city water off at any time I am away from the "camper." No guarantee that a pipe will not spring a leak when you are "at home" but odds are more in your favor this way. My water leak in our 76 ex-P.B. had a
different cause but result was the same. We lifted the carpet in worst area and put plastic drink bottles under carpet to aid/speed drying. Good luck!

I just lowered the city water pressure by adjusting the city water valve more closed. And yes I was allowed!

Like Emery,
I use city water to fill the tank and use the pump exclusively. I did
this on the GMC and continue the practice on the SOB. I had the same thing
happen once on the GMC and traced the problem to a check valve that needed
replacement.

Partially closing the valve has no effect on pressure, It is a flow/volume control and has no effect on final pressure
