Field coils in both the running and donor Onan are bad, so I think it's time to move on. What have folks replaced it with? Something available now, so Honda EV6010 doesn't qualify. Something like the 5.5 Cummins Onan? We live the the Great Pacific NW, so AC isn't required (OK, 3 days a year maybe), so we could just toss a 3K portable in the Onan cavity and get by.

I'm quite happy with my Onan Microlite 2800. More than enough power for AC+, fits nicely in generator compartment. It normally comes with a built in muffler which means it exhausts from the rear/bottom of the unit. Tough to disconnect should removal of the unit be necessary. A variation uses an external muffler so exhaust comes out front/bottom. Easier to disconnect if unit must come out.
I don't think you'd want to mount a portable in the coach even if it would fit.

When my Kohler was down, I mounted a Champion pull-start generator to a platform Hitch Haul and ran the shore cable to it while i drove down the road. It got us to Yosemite and back that way and was a very viable alternative. Plus it freed up the compartment for additional storage. The whole setup didn't cost $350.

Actually, I'd get hold of Miller and see about sourcing a new field coil from him. All the options require changes. The Onan was made for the coach. If you don't mind minor (or major) surgery, take a tape measure down to Homer the Despot or TSC or Lowes and measure the available offerings. Once you take the tank off and take the set out of its carrying frame, a lot of them will fit.

In my opinion it IS a common failure at this point based on the age of these machines. I've seen at least 14 units in the past four years with bad field assemblies. Another one came in yesterday; it is on the work bench right now getting its coils cut out in preparation for new copper ones. As usual the lower coil was the one with the damaged windings; the other three were intact.
Aluminum magnet wire in the presence of moisture, vibration and flying dust and debris is a recipe for trouble.

Hey Jim, once you get all the accessories off (fuel pump, rear mount, electronics, etc) and pull the 4 long bolts should the bell housing just come off? That's what the manual seems to say, but I've beaten it silly with a nylon mallet and it won't budge. Any tricks? Thanks!

It won't "just come off" due to the tail bearing's slight press fit in the bell housing. Our technique is to maintain moderate (!) pressure using two prybars (err, screwdrivers) on diagonal corners between the bell housing and the corners of the field while having a helper knock on the motor mounts with a mallet. You may have to move the prybars to opposite corners during the process. Don't pry too hard, though, otherwise you may crack the bell housing. We've also had success applying gentle heat from a propane torch to the bell housing in the vicinity of the bearing.
The field assembly has an angled strap welded on each corner that serves as a good place to pry against. You don't want to pry anywhere else due to potential damage to the laminations.

I just need to mount my muffler on my Honda EU6500 inverter...I'll be posting soon, it's not a remove and replace, there is some cutting and welding required of the old onan drawer...I retained the original Honda 6500 outlets and controls, mounted a pulse pump, retained much of the integral cooling features Honda engineered.
Quiet, sips fuel, expensive to acquire. Hope to go dual fuel as well.
Runs my 2 rooftop units no problem.

Sean,
I think that everyone would be interested on your installation. Hope that you have taken many pictures and can put them on the photo site. With some modification such as removal of the fuel tank, handles, feet and wheels it would fit in the generator compartment well. It would also help if you had a templet of the modification of the power-drawer slides and floor. Waiting to see your installation. Granted it is a more expensive unit, but it is very quiet and fuel efficient power unit.

Another method to use for separating the end bell is as follows:
Remove the cover from your points and place a clean cloth over the points. This allows you room to place a small screw jack between the intake manifold and end bell. Apply some pressure to the jack and pry the corners of the end bell as it begins to separate; repeat this step using increasing pressure as needed until the end bell releases. Be careful not to apply too much pressure at once. JWID

3600 RPM vs. the Onan NH's 1800 RPM. This distinction is not well appreciated not only from a noise perspective but also longevity.

I appreciate it bigtime. Thje 3600 single cylinder Onans don't hold up well at all by comparison. When I took one of ours in to the local (cummins Onan South) shop, they had a pile of them in the corner. I have a 2800 (I think) in the garage which starts and runs and makes power. I haven't decided to keep it or sell it. With mounts for an Econoline or like van, hang it underneath.
